    Hi folks,

My mums car is giving problems with the blower fan. It just stopped working at anything except setting 4. Does anyone know what could be causing this?
Obviously its getting power if its working at all so that rules out fuses and relays, right?

    New resistor I reckon
would that not stop it working completely?
is it attached to the fan? so I can check what I need.

Classic case of resistor for sure.It will still work but the power is not going through the resistor.I got burnt (not literally) with a one for a passat a few years ago.Same issue, I thought I was great and feeling smug having got one from a scrappy for half nothing, but my chin hit the floor when the problem was still there:(.

A new one would have cost nearly more than the car was worth:p

I had the same problem with a Renault last year.
Resister pack was the problem, or to be more precise the thermal fuse, which I managed to replace for a couple of € and an hours work.

The thermal fuse restricts the current to the blower motor on settings 1, 2 and 3, but is overridden on setting 4. (well it was on the Renault)

I'd suggest you find a good VW forum, introduce yourself and ask for assistance.
That's what I did and got many replies with parts numbers and even some pics to repair the resister pack.

In my case, rain water was getting into the blower intake, from under the cover below the windscreen, because the holes that drain water away were clogged with muck and allowing the water to be sucked into the fan assembly, causing corrosion.

    Hope this helps.
