There are collectors for most things, including matchboxes, but as usual rarity and condition are important. Some pics would be useful.

Have you checked out eBay? http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/Tobacciana-Smoking-/593/i.html?_from=R40&Type=Matchboxes%252F%2520Matchbooks&_dmpt=UK_Collectables_Tobacciana_Smoking_LE&_nkw=matchbox&_sop=1

They probably aren't going to be worth much but try sticking them on Adverts.ie or eBay, rather than binning them. :)

Hello Dub. I think you got a great collection and should keep them. Philumeny is the hobby of collecting matchboxes and matchbooks. I picked up this hobby as a kid and have a few thousand boxes/books now. They can be worth quite a bit. Depending on the rarity, each one can be worth nothing...to a few thousand Euros. Why not keep them in a few boxes and keep them aside. It may be a hobby you might want to get into later. You might might even have a a treasure trove there.

A also have several hundred, some of them going back to the 1950's.

Can you give me an idea of what sort of box is collectable?

Fpr example i have a proof sheet of a matchbox made by Magure and papperson to celebrate thier 100th aniversary but the matchbox itself never went into production, also several unusual novelties like waterproof matches and one advertising a showband managed by louis Walsh with his phone number on it!

Collectable can mean quite a bit to different collectors. For example, some go by countries, year, type, client, advertising, etc. Each of these can have sub-types too! Some just collect the boxes.books without the actual matches in. It really varies with the individual interest. That proof sheet you got for M&G is goo. Keep it. The one you got with Louis Walsh, keep it too! I saw the your picture with the matchboxes and you have quite a few good ones and some that are still easily bought over the counter. But please also understand that thought those that are still easily bought cab have different versions over the years and they can be worth something. Please check this link

It is not much but might get your interest in getting into this hobby.

A good piece of advice though it not to listen to folks who say that your collection is not worth anything. Its a way for them them to get your stuff free or cheaply. Please remember the worth of the collection is what you it means to you. I know collectors who only collect the latest matchboxes so don't let age be a factor. But I did notice that some of your matchboxes and books have bit of wear and tear. If possible, keep them seperately. Like stamp or coin collectors, there are albums or special containers sold. You can also make your own storage system to keep or display them.
