Why the big panic for ONE day??

I notice that town is absolutely packed out with people today and tomorrow which is understandable coming up to Xmas, what I dont understand is the queues and queues of people in supermarkets with stressed heads on them, frantically loading trolleys like their lives depended on it. Its ONE day, for Jesus sake, ONE DAY. You are not going to starve to death if you missed out on one item in your trolley and most small shops like Spar and Centra are open day after Xmas so anything you need can be bought then.

You would swear the shops are gonna close down for months the way people are panic buying, absolutely mad.

I don't think there's anything wrong with investing some effort in an occasion and who doesn't hate having to queue for ages? Having a whinge OP, you're probably just hungry.

How do you increase sales of alcohol?

You ban it for one day

By who? Nobody even knows for sure what year he was born in, let alone what month

It's Christmas you big Scrooge! One day when almost everyone in the country isn't working and spends time with Family. Let them go crazy for one day a year.

its tradition that has got out of control and with every year people get more serious thinking they have to impress everyone and their dog,its just a legitimate cover for most people who dont really care about religeon any other time of the year to get wasted/fat/in debt/free presents.

christmas isnt jesus birthday either,it feels very weird seeing people who bash christianity for most of the year only to go to christmas eve midnight mass, get themselves into debt at christmas through throwing a big party and buying ipads/big tvs etc all round for the family.

if have got a particular dislike or hatred of something, its not sending a very clear message to the kids by then celebrating its head guy once a year, and then getting the family struggling to pay for essential things for a while afterwards.
-have got several close relatives who do this.

you're getting the regular weekly stuff plus your Christmas food, if you get it all in one go you don't have to face the crowds again. It's not rocket surgery.

I do my christmas shop at 6am on Christmas eve, it's lovely and peaceful and you can take your time around the place.

    I'm not religious.

But I think Jesus would have wanted what the OP is talking about.

Overspending on rubbish for one day, while others sleep in doorways.

It was never believed that he was born in December. December 25th was used by Pagans to celebrate the Winter Solstice. In the third century Constantine used the 25th to celebrate the birth of Jesus instead of creating a new day of worship.

I wouldn't know if town was packed or there were big queues as I've had my Christmas shopping done since 3 weeks ago. Today I just spent my stress free day masturbating relaxing on the couch, ah this is the life ;):p

I went down to tesco earlier to buy a 12 pack of assorted tayto's and two small jars of spaghetti bologneise, I also decided to pick up a litre of milk even though I already have a half litre in the fridge. I felt like a bit of a b*stard for adding to the pre xmas commotion. :pac:

The b*stards are the last minute shoppers, you were there purely for the essentials!

    How was the spag bol?

Imho the hype actually adds to it, as long as your not in too much of a rush of course, was in town earlier getting some last bits in and it all felt very busy type xmassy to me, then again im biased on the whole loving xmas thing though :D

This rubbish annoys me! Of course people stock up for Christmas, between large family get togethers and shops being closed during the holiday period, people need extra supplies. Plus, I'm sure there are plenty of people who choose to spend Christmas hibernating and don't leave the house at all for the week.

They are closed for one day. Not a week, not a month, not a lifetime, one measly day. Any supplies that are missing can be got in Spar or Centra the day after Xmas, its not like we are going to have a surge of starvation because the supermarkets are closed for a day.

Not if you live in the countryside. Our local shop closes at 12noon on Christmas Eve and doesn't open again until the 27th.

And as I already said, if you take into account large family get togethers, travelling etc., people may not have time to get to the shops for a number of days but still have to feed a larger number of people than usual.

Also, I don't think anyone is implying a "surge in starvation", that's a tad melodramatic.

You noticed that the town is mental tomorrow?

    You're good.

Haven't been near a shop so far.

In to superquinn at 7 in the morning to collect the turkey (want to know why it had to be 7 in the morning - why not fcuking 11 or 12?)

Missus will be getting a few quid in a card - no queues, no mayhem, nothing.

I love Christmas and all the hype but a family member whose a bit of a grinch did make me laugh when he said Christmas is about 1 of 2 things. Celebrating some guy* they wrote a book about and whose been dead thousands of years or a guy who enjoys dressing in red asking us to put our kids on his knees all the while having our addresses and names and sneaking into our house in the middle of the night. Either way you'd have to be slightly nuts.
