Asbestos rope used in stove installation?

    Hi Guys,

My parents had a stove installed during the week and I came over to take a look at it. I asked what type of sealant the installation guy had used and apparently he'd used "asbestos rope".

Now I'd never heard of this stuff, but apparently he'd assured my parents it was safe ("its not what you think, it doesn't have asbestos in it!").

    I've attached some pictures below.
Apart from what look like some gaps around the stove, is this stuff safe to have in the living room?

The guy didn't use any PPE and cut the rope to length on the spot.

    Asbestos rope is fine.
That's a sh1t looking job though...it doesnt look as if its actually sealed around the top .

Guys still call it asbestos rope, even though it's not, I agree on the ****e finish.

    Thanks guys.

Its lit now and you can see the flames clearly through the gaps!

    That doesn't sound good.

I'd get it looked at again and sealed properly.

And get your parents a Carbon Monoxide detector too.

Have one installed a few feet away.
The guy is calling out tomorrow to take a look at it, I went around the stove with an envelope and only the left hand side has any sort of seal.

How did this one go? It looks like a diy'er done it. It's Glass fibre rope too not asbestos.

Guy never called back apparently. He charged €200 for the job above but won't stand by his work.

What's the best way to sort this out myself?
Does the stove need to be brought further back into the fireplace, or do I actually need to fill in the gaps with more rope/filler?

You will need to bring it back flush with the surround. You will have to stick your hand up inside the stove through the opening at the top (make sure the fire is not lit :D), there should be a clamp up the securing the stove in (might not even be done properly). Loosen this and re-adjust the stove.

The fire bed might not be level too and this would cause it to.
