Details 2004 1.8 TDi with 97,000 (approx) on the clock. Was driving okay with no problems. Made a quick stop on the way home and when I returned to the car problem. The engine is turning over and sounds fine. However the glow plu light is flashing, Engine workshop comes on and the car won't allow me drive, ie it won't move from Parked to D. When in switched the car off and the gear lever moves fine. Anyway had to have the car towed to my mechanic who will have a look tomorrow. Anyone any experience of this problem and what was the outcome?

Id be very surprised if its not the brake light pedal switch. Have the same problem in mine and it brings on the glow plug light and the traction control light too. Mine is a manual but if the switch is gone which Id lay money on that it is, It wont be sending a signal to the gear control unit to say the brake pedal is pressed and release the gear stick.

Not too bad price wise, Picked one up yesterday for 12 euro from the main dealer. Recovery costs are gonna get ya though.

Just got a call from mechanic. That is exactly what the problem was thankfully not too expensive. Yeah cost me 150 Euro to have it collected and brought to mechanic.

Do you have breakdown assist on your insurance? If so it should cover towing.
