Mud flaps

Greetings car peoples. I would greatly appreciate your assistance.
After some overly enthusiastic parking next to an unusually high kerb my car (Vauxhall astra) is now minus a rear wheel mud flap.
Do i need to get that replaced?
How important are they? I mean, will it damage the car not having one or are they mainly for aesthetic purposes?
I'm pretty broke at the moment and my local mechanic always makes me feel like less of a man when I go near him with these minor problems.
    Any advice would be appreciated

Safe and happy motoring to you all.

They do nothing other then reduce the amount of road grime that ends up on your bodywork.

Do you still have the mudflap? if so they are only held on with a couple of self tapping screws in most cases.

I do, but one side of it where the screw would go seems to have broken off.
    Thanks a million though

I wouldn't panic about it then. Maybe next time its in for a service ask your mechanic to throw it back on, he should have no problem with that I wouldn't think.

It is literally a 2 minute job to replace it.

Don't feel embarrassed about asking your mechanic to throw it back on again...he'll put it back on in a blink.
