Samsung TV has died

Firstly I hope this is the right forum for this query - please feel free to move if not.

I have a four-year old bog standard Samsung LCD telly. It died on me tonight - or at least it's sat down and won't do anything.

The standby light is on, and when I press to turn the TV on it blinks four or five times. After this the light should go out and the telly on - but it just goes back to the standby light being on constantly.

I was half watching the rugby last night and I noticed the screen blank a couple of times, but I thought it was just the network coverage. Tonight, as described above, it won't even turn on.

I rang Power City about it and to check if it was still under any sort of warranty. That's when I discovered I have it 4 years . Doesn't time fly.

Anyway, no warranty, and they can't do anything until after Christmas in any case.

Has anyone come across this before, and is there anything I can do to eke some like out of the thing before I throw it out the window with frustration? I've tried the switch if off/switch it on again with no joy, and I'm plain out of ideas now.

    AAAAAAAARGH!!!

    Thanks, rant over.

It's most likely the capacitors in the power supply have failed. This is an extremely common fault on the samsung tv's. They came with under-rated capacitor which fail over time.

I saw a thread here the other day that samsung are fixing these out of warranty now. Give them a ring and I think they send a technician out to you.

Other option is if you're handy with a soldering iron get some capacitor's and replace them yourself. Thats what I did ,cost about €6.

Google samsung lcd capacitor fault it'll show up loads of times.

Could be a good excuse to treat yourself to a new tv in the Christmas sales (if funds allow!)! ;)

Is it only a problem with lcd or are plasma's effected as well?

It's only four years old!!! And I've just had to spend a fortune on car repairs - I've had it with technology now!!

Thanks to everyone else for the contact details - I found an email contact form and have banged off an emaiil to them. I'm not optimistic about a reply any time soon but at least it's something to go on.

    Cheers.

    www.badcaps.net

Basically any mains powered electronic equipment shipped since the turn of the millennium is likely to fail because of Capacitor plague except for some recent manufacturers who didn't put penny pinching (and we are literally talking a few cent) ahead of the brand name.

Just to let all you helpful people know, I finally have my telly back!

Two and a half weeks later, but that's more down to the timing of the breakdown than anything else - once businesses resumed after New Year it was picked up on Thursday and returned to me yesterday. I think in the end it may not have been the capacitors, but something similar to do with the power supply, but Samsung covered it anyway.

    Cheers for the help!

Just for reference my 2007 Samsung 40" LCD developed the now infamous capacitor problem and they sent someone out who replaced the power supply unit FOC. In fairness ca't fault them on their after sales.
