I'd generally bring €100 a day to spend in places like Majorca, just to put into perspective how much I spend, I've heard Japan is expensive, so how much spending money should I plan on having per day?

    does that €100 include accommodation?
Tokyo has become more expensive recently, the exchange rate isn't great. But, like most places, it depends on what your expectations are. I stayed in ryokans which aren't too expensive.eating and drinking out can be expensive, but again there is a wide range of options!

100 a day is more than enough including accomodation, depending on what type of place you're staying in. Cheap hostel might run you under 15 a day.

I was there this summer, food wise its pretty good, 10-15 euro will get you a solid meal in a restaurant, could probably allow 20-25 for the day food wise (and thats eating decent quality stuff).

Drink is really expensive in bars, your talking like 10 euro for a pint !

Accommodation is pretty expensive, a double room in a hostel was like 60 quid when I was there ( not sure how much dorms are, I think 15 euros would be very cheap), a hotel room comparable with here would probably be like 150 euro a night. The sakura hostels are very nice and will have plenty of western tourists to team up with if that's what you are looking for. Be aware as well that Japanese people like there beds pretty hard too.

There isn't a day pass for a metro system, so it can actually become a real cash burner getting from a to b to see the sights, I'd allow €5-€10 a day if your doing any significant travel around the city (which you will be !)

Buy a suica card for traveling around Tokyo.

As said above, eating out can be reasonable - try having your main meal at lunch, many of the department stores will have good value restaurants. Try under Tokyo station for a wide range of eateries.

Drink is expensive but a few cans from a vending machine in your room or down under train stations you'll find cheap and cheerful local bars.

We stayed in a business hotel in Yanagibashi in April 2010. €400 for two rooms for four nights. Rooms were very small but had everything. Five minute walk from train station and plenty of little restaurants around.
