Hi, how do I go about wording this. We needed my other half's qualifications, so his mum sent over every school report from primary school. After reading them I realised how much better today's education system is. From day 1 he was branded lazy, incompetent and what have you. He moved to
Algeria when he was 16 and this was the turning point. There was a different attitude to education and he excelled. To cut a long story short, I want to send a letter of appreciation to my sons primary school to high-light the difference they have made and thank them, but one teacher was exceptional and changed everything for my son, (raised his confidence and attitude towards school to a point where he is more comfortable in school and as a result, his grades have jumped),. My question is, how do I highlight his contribution without insulting others whom have contributed.

I'm sure your son's school would love to receive such a letter. In teaching, as with many professions, we rarely hear about people doing a good job, it's usually the bad news stories and complaints that take precedence, so thank you for taking the time to show appreciation.

I would just start the letter with a general paragraph thanking the principal and all the staff for the contribution they made to your son's academic and personal development. Then include a second paragraph "I would particularly like to offer my thanks to Mrs. X, who. . ." Reiterate at the very end of the letter that you were happy with all his teachers.

You could write two letters one for the school and the principal in general and then one privately to the teacher in question.
I'm sure this would mean more to him than putting it into the other letter just for the sake of the principal seeing it.

Thanks a million for the advice guys, it's true that we are all too quick to complain and sometimes not so when it comes to giving praise. Better late than never, I suppose. A very merry Christmas to you both.
