I could, but the staff might get a bit pissy at my new regime. "Sorry lads, it's willow clippings again this week, I'm gone moneyless this year".

You would need to be fairly wealthy to go a year without spending money.

Seriously. The more money you have, the less stuff you need to pay for and the more stuff people give you, it's an odd one, but it's true.

i read a book like this before, the chap went without money and thought he was great.Basically all he did was work in shops in exchange for food and slept there also.

So,instead of him taking money,he took things that you buy with money.Moral of the story,it's a load of crap and i suspect this book is the same.

We had this thread some time ago. Some journalist went a year and only spent one penny, but as was pointed out by some smart people here on Boards, she owned her own house so no rent, she had a garden with Veg in it, and she did some shooting and fishing. If I had a house, a shotgun, a fishing rod etc I could live cheaply too, but these things cost money.

I suspect a case of "Well if I can live on nettle soup and mushrooms, then anyone can!".

Some lad does live without money in the UK. He owns a large willow farm and has a wooden house built in the middle of it.

I suspect he also own a landrover, a shotgun, a chainsaw, lots of assorted woodworking tools etc.

It's easier to barter cash for work than to own and maintain a land holding and tools capable of feeding and providing for a family.

With the soup kitchens that they have now in Cork and Dublin, you can get dinner, dessert and take away sandwiches daily, thus free food.

In Cork, they are supposed to be feeding 1500 people weekly.

I wonder how many of these people are genuinely in need.

I think not spending money is almost impossible in this day. However, cutting back and living a slightly more minimalist lifestyle is more achievable. We live in a world where people think that the more they have, the happier they will be. When you take a step back, are we not all getting overwhelmed by a constant need for more!!? Our houses and minds are getting more cluttered and weighed down everyday.
I havent read the book to be able to make a decent comment on what his ideas / opinions are but if hes promoting a less cluttered life and less worries over your expenses then maybe it might be worth a read.
I think that you can definitely spend less without becoming a miserable old git! Theres a huge difference between cutting back on frivolous spending and living on a shoe string and being a miser!

You could get a job as a live in servant.

Or live off the land. But the trick is owning the land or finding land that no one minds you being on.

But you'll find that in almost every case you are one step away from someone who uses money and you are bartering with them.

I know a fella who lived off charity for six months and that alone, but that is about it. I am sure this book will be a good read and inspire many of us to look at ways on how to save money.

Suppose you would end up a miserable fcuker.

    What's this 'end up' business?

IIRC, he ended up getting sponsored and scrounging off everybody. In my book, thats not the same as living on nothing.

I can only conceive of four possible ways to do this.

1.) Be rich enough to purchase a years worth of supplies in advance.
2.) Have enough resources to produce everything you need yourself.
3.) Use a barter system where you don't spend 'money' (which would include credit).
4.) Depend on the generosity of others for what you need (or steal, or otherwise obtain...).

    1 & 2 just mean you're rich. Big deal.
3 is no different than spending money, it's just less efficient.
4 is just living off others.

There isn't anything particularly interesting or honorable about any of those things.

I work in a job where I travel a lot, so stay in a lot of hotels and eat out almost every day. This year I only spent about €2000
