Spider That Builds Its Own Spider Decoys Discovered

I for one welcome our new spider overlords.

A spider that builds elaborate, fake spiders and hangs them in its web has been discovered in the Peruvian Amazon.


A closer looked revealed the illusion. Above the 1-inch-long decoy sat a much smaller spider. Striped, and less than a quarter-inch long, the spider was shaking the web. It was unlike anything Torres had ever seen. “It blew my mind,” he said.

Im told Im a freak by the OH for not killing them when they are in our home. I just carefully put them outside.

Cool, this was discovered in the Tambopato Research Centre, I spent a week there last year, its deep into the amazon, 2 day boat ride before you find any civilization, such as hot water or electricity...full of crazy ass bugs..so it makes so much sense that the "hotel" rooms dont have 4 walls, solid floors or a connected roof....some amount of crazy **** to be shooed from your room each night!

Is it instinctual that they know what shape to imitate, or do they even know they are imitating themselves...?

It's craziness. I hate the common house spider but absolutely love the huge monsterous freaks of nature like this :L

Other miniature awesomeness Ive seen on youtube includes

- when ants get flooded they attach together to form a flat surfaced 'ant boat' type thing. they make a boat out of themselves, the queen gets to sit on top.

- truly awesome one this - when a hornet gets into a bees nest and starts hauling ass and killing everything in sight the bees cannot sting it through its armor.
So...they clamber allover the hornet making a 'bee ball' type thingy. (a bit like a pile on in school)
Then they raise their body temperatures and literally oven cook the hornet in the middle to death.

f you put an indoors spider outside you're basically killing it anyway, they can't survive out there
