Jeffrey Moss, a well-known hacker who goes by the online nickname "Dark Tangent," recommends disabling Javascript -- a popular programming language -- in Adobe Reader, because hackers often insert malware into PDF documents.

Jaysus, I'd recommend not using Adobe Reader fullstop.

Sometime ago, my Dad had PC problems and I was talking him through fixing it. After 30 minutes of "Click file", "I dont see file", "Its top left", "Oh yes!", "Christ give me strength", I used Metasploit to generate an evil PDF file. I sent it to him and asked him to open it. It gave me a remote shell on his computer. "Go make some tea Dad". Not long later the issue was sorted. This is how Tech Support should be done.

He also reminded me to only visit websites that start with "https" instead of "http" so hackers couldn’t eavesdrop on my Internet traffic on the hotel’s wireless network.

Unfortunately, even that isn't enough. With some ARP poisoning, and judicious use of SSL strip even HTTPS data can be sniffed.
