I met him a couple of times, always seemed like a decent fella, nowhere near as polished as some of the other political types, really sorry to hear this news.

RIP Shane and commiserations to his family.

Didn't know the man, but as a Minister with responsibility for forestry, I think he was doing a good job.
Condolences to his wife, children, extended family and friends.

It's such a huge issue in our society that tends to get swept under the rug. I've lost family and friends to suicide, and never being able to get closure on why is a constant cross to bear for anyone left to pick up the pieces. My heart goes out to his wife and children, and I pray that he finds peace, whatever lies beyond the grave. <snip> We need to step back and look at what's important, we have lost our way.

Just a reminder about the first post in this thread:
"Condolences only in this thread please, let's leave politics and current affairs for another time and place."

Do I REALLY have to ask people not to speculate about how the man died???

It's not speculation when you've read it in a reputable publication like the Irish Times. I assume you deleted previous posts without being up to date yourself

Fair enough, I hadn't spotted that one. The Irish Times is the only one reporting it though, as far as I can see.

    I'll restore those other posts.

I just presumed it was a heart attack...I can't believe how many have taken their own lives this year or have tried to. We need to keep an eye on those that are hurting but sometimes you really can't tell.
