56yr old father of three. I presume he died suddenly.
Mr McEntee, a farmer from Castletown near Navan in Co Meath, was first elected to the Dáil in 2005, in the by-election caused by the appointment of John Bruton to the post of EU Ambassador in Washington.
He retained his seat in Meath East in 2007 and 2011, when he was appointed Minister of State at the Department of Agriculture and Food, with responsibility for Food, Food Safety and Horticulture.
Mr McEntee was a farmer for 15 years before becoming a full-time politician, as well as an agricultural sales representative.
He was involved in the GAA and had trained a number of football teams including the Meath minors.
He is survived by his wife and three children.
In a statement, Taoiseach Enda Kenny said he was devastated at Mr McEntee's death.

This is really shocking news, Shane was a great guy. I was one of those GAA footballers he trained all those years ago.

May he rest in peace. My thoughts are with Kathleen and the kids.

A sad occurrence for any family at any time of the year including the present period.
My sympathies to his family and anyone else's at this time that also is so unfortunate to suffer a loss.

    RIP.

The cause of his death is still officially unknown at this time. I think it's unfair to the family to speculate at this stage.

Game of football in no-man's land?

Okay folks, can we lay off the speculation and local rumours of the causes of the man's death until we get official confirmation from a reputable news source? I've deleted several posts already.

    Thanks.

Condolences to his family and friends. Tragedy like that transcends politics and it's terrible for a family to lose a member so close to Christmas.

In fairness to el weirdo he removed posts speculating on the cause of death, my own included. I just didn't stop to think before posting & whilst nothing bad was posted it certainly had no place here at the moment. That was done very fast.
I suppose when someone is in the public eye condolence threads are par for the course.
Once no one is being malicious or getting petty about his political career then I don't see a huge problem with a thread like this.
Many families get great comfort out of reading messages long after a person has passed & there's a possibility his family, friends & colleagues will read some of what's on here.
So it would be nice to have a thread worthy of their eyes instead of arguing about other sites or whether this should be left open.

My thoughts are with the struggling families, homeless people, the thousands of carers around the country, struggling single parents because of the recent budget he and others voted for and signed off, which spell even further hardship on people .. there are thousands of people who will struggle even more this christmas and struggle furthermore in the new year because of the recent budget he and others voted for. Comments like "he was a nice man" maybe he was but actions speak louder then words in my view and anyone that voted for the recent budget I have no time for whatsoever.

We've heard the usual complaints about the budget over and over again the past few weeks and there are hundreds of other threads about it.

With four days to Christmas and with something as tragic as this happening, the best you can come up with is "He voted for the budget therefore I don't give a damn that he's dead"?

Do you really think this is a suitable place and time to vent your anger?

RIP Shane and my sympathy to the family.

    Are they really?
Or are your thoughts really about how you can cynically invoke all of these groups just to get a cheap dig in?

You are a scumbag. Speaking as someone who has had a close family member pass away in 'newsworthy' circumstances, I can tell you that your idiotic post will cause a lot of hurt to somebody one day. Also, you have no idea what you are talking about.

Most decent people feel for those affected most by this recession but can still find it to say RIP about the death of a man with a family. I have no love for FG but at a time like this its kinda irrelevant what party he was in. He was a dad and a husband, a son etc. Its very sad. RIP and condolances to his family.

Put your political differences aside, please. A man has died today. A person who was elected by his constituency to represent them in government and work for the betterment of our country, regardless of what you believe was right or wrong in supporting the party, this poor man has passed away days from Christmas, leaving behind a family - a wife and three kids - friends, relatives, and so on.

Politics aside, this was a man who was loved, cherished and well respected by many. On a personal level, people loved and cared for him. He leaves a void now in many peoples lives.

I don't know him. But I feel for the people he has left behind and I know from the tributes paid by friends and politicians that he was a much loved man that will be very much missed on a personal level which is all this is about. Politics doesn't come into it.
