I've heard some people say there just as bad as the 1.4 for burning oil etc. but then again I know a few people that have had hassle free ownership suppose it depends on how well looked after they are, but I would be wary of any without a nct, if I was in the market I would be looking for one that recently passed its Nct so I can view the emissions reading

Afaik there were two versions of the 1.6 litre engine back in that Golf, the 8 valve and the 16 valve version, both had around the same power but apparently the 16v version was just a larger version of the 1.4 litre which had a reputation for buring alot of oil and wasn't that reliable. If going for one then aim for the 8v, it was an older design but more robust, the 16v version would have had a 16v badge on the engine block.

Of course this is all relative, when looking at an 11 or 12 year old car you need to judge at the car itself on condition rather than reputation.

Check the drain where the doors meet the roof, very common for this to get blocked.

yeah had a look at the seals at the top of the door the look abit nackerd, and the door hangs slightly lower then it should probably strained over the years, any idea how much a new seal would cost ?

No idea I'm afraid. Cannot imagine it being that expensive being only made of rubber.

The leak s usually due to the inner door seal that is foam and disintegrates. To access this remove the door inner panel trim. Its the same as the Seat http://www.seatcupra.net/forums/showthread.php?t=44216

I did all my 4 doors using roofing sealant and havent had a leak since. Before all 4 doors were letting water in to the point it was like a boat inside with water sloshing around. Very poor design in fairness.
