Mates emigrating and is giving me his 05 Z4 for €3k as I helped him out over the last few years.

Since its a €7-8k car Im going to throw a few hundred at it and make it nice as I'll get it back since the purchase price was so cheap.

    Going to replace the:

    Brake disks,
    Brake pads,
    Shocks,
    Tyres,
    Try Terraclean http://www.terracleanireland.ie/
    Laser align the wheels.

Anything else worth doing that I'm missing out on?

How much are new shocks for a Z4?
Could get some second hand coil overs or just uprated suspension in general?

I've heard they can be a bit boaty as standard.

Does it need shocks? Or are you upgrading to something more sporty?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,611 ✭✭✭cgarrad

Nit getting coilovers, just replace the existing ones, done 110,000 miles and easy while the disks are being done.

Not needed just new is nice and after 110,000 there will def be wear.

at 110, might well be worth overhauling what bits of the cooling system havent been replaced yet, or all of it, if nothing has ever been done, which is probably unlikely at 110k miles....

It the same price as a tank of petrol and worth a shot if it boosts economy even 5%.

Saw it. Considering it myself but haven't spoken to anyone who has had it done yet.

Isn't there one of the Z4's pretty good on fuel? The 2.0?

Sports coupé and fuel economy... No. :(

2.0 only weighs 1250kg so not too bad. Only a 4 cylinder. Have a 318CI at the moment with the same engine, its crap ;-)

You wont get insured easily or properly on modified suspension in coilovers. Keep it stock if you want an easy life..

I found it incredibly hard to get a decent quote with coilovers fitted, got refused off quite a few insurance companies.

Before you carry out any work, have the car examined thoroughly by someone who knows what they're doing. You can then make up a list of what, if anything, needs doing now and what to expect in the future.

Who with? No mainstream insurer quotes for mods on new business, coils are like a red flag to them. Brokers are the only option. Chances are if on coils there are other mods invalidating the policy. To be blunt many of very high payouts are from boy racers with a few boys/ girls in the back hitting something at high speed and there being personal injury claims in the millions. See here

I'd agree with this and would add brake fluid and gear oil change too. Plus give it a good service. (Usual oil change along with fresh plugs, air filter and fuel filter).

When I was getting insured I declared my wheels as a mod' but they said it wasn't a performance upgrade so they didn't have to know about it. Obviously suspension is different but that piece of writing is trying to tell I'd that new carpets and a CD player have to be declared? That's bollocks and you know it.

Nice sweeping profiling by the way. Sure everyone on CO's must be a prick and if they declare the suspension well it'd only make sense not to declare anything else.
    Cop on.

@TT: Ah that could be it, everyone I know had added them afterwards, not much of an increase though.

Thinking of doing the coils esp if they are the the non bosch ones they used around that time that gave loads of problems.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,611 ✭✭✭cgarrad

Assuming it’s been on BMW scheduled maintenance, I would think that you have only done two oil changes. If it were my car I would change the oil and oil filter, air filter, the cabin air filter, the fuel filter, spark plugs, and the differential and transmission fluid.
Lastly, I would make sure to change the coolant, thermostat and water pump. Make sure to only use BMW factory coolant that is blue: all others have stuff that can hurt the alloys in your cooling system. Bimmerworld and a Bavarian Autosport also sell some stuff would work but those are the only places I would get it.
It would depend if any shocks or bushings were leaking or worn, but If they are you could consider putting new shocks. I like Konis myself. As far as bushings go I prefer PowerFlex.
    Don’t forget about brake fluid!
The above recommendations are if you plan to keep it for the rest of your natural born life!
    Good luck!
