Certificate of Competency

Hello. I was just wondering if I can now drive by myself since I passed the driving test and have the "Certificate of Competency".

The reason why I'm asking this is because the new plastic driving licence will be out by 19th of January and I'd like to get that one instead of waiting 10 years and then getting it. I tried looking for information on the RSA website but found nothing regarding this topic. Is there anyone else out there that is also waiting for the new licence to come out and then apply? Also, I don't mind having the L plates as long as I can drive by myself :D

Until you hand in your cert for the full licence you're still classed as a learner so you'll still need an accompanying driver, L-Plates etc...

Personally I'd hold out for the new licence although I'm not encouraging you to break the law!

The other thing about the Certificates of Competency is that it is the date when your new licence is issued that is marked not the date you passed your test.

Do the sooner you get the licence the better tbh

Lol! You're really "in favor" off the new type licence. :p

Yep! I travel alot due to work commitments and trying to use my current DL abroad is a bloody nightmare and the looks on their faces when I present it is like "WTF is this !"

And the fact that it fits perfectly in the ole wallet and won't fall to sh*t like the current one is another bonus. I wish I could swap mine but it's only available to new applicants, renewals and adding a category. I have to wait until 2018!

I don't know about now, but when I passed it stated on the back of the certificate of competency that it plus the provisional was the equivalent of a full licence or something to that effect, don't remember the exact wording.

I do remember being stopped once and the provisional plus the certificate of competency was accepted as a full licence.

I'm sorry, I don't believe this was ever the case. It certainly isn't now, and it certainly wasn't 5/6 years ago when I did mine.

Cert of competency was never a license, whether or not you had the provisional/learner permit with it.

That thought did occur to me but knowing my luck I'd lose the new licence and have to expain why I lost another one! Think I'll bide my time for another 6 years :(

It may not be the case now, hence me saying so, but it certainly was when I passed my test, granted that was 11/12 years ago, as I said it was stated on the back of the certificate that it plus the provisional was equal to a full licence.
