This is a popular route with a decent climb in the middle of it. If you go through Oughterard first there are some nice pubs on the way back, perhaps Padricins in Furbo

    A few more here.

If you are out around Loughrea there are a few nice hilly routes. I believe they are listed on the Seven Springs CC site.

The Burren is a great route to cycle with plenty of climbing and descending too. Great coffee stop in Ballyvaughan, think its 'Soda' or something similar.

Should contact some of the clubs and see if you can tag onto one of the weekend spins.

Vasco further down from Ballyvaughan is great, has bike parking too.

    Edit: Closed during Winter

This is a fantastic route if you're up for the distance. There's a good climb between Cornamona and Maam and a longer one out of Maam up to Maam Cross. Both Maam and Maam Cross are lovely places to stop.

Winds are generally northwesterly in the winter and that can make the spin home from Maam Cross really enjoyable (about 40Km).

Used to be our regular training route years ago. I went over it again this summer (went around the back of Maamtrasna as well); great memories!

Hoping to do the lap of the Corrib, Thursday or Friday next week, beautiful part of the country. Headford to Galway is an awful dull stretch of road though.

Last time I was out that direction, left Galway, out the coast road, right round and back up to Maam, great roads, fantastic surfaces in the main. Turned right in Maam for Oughterard into a fairly stiff headwind, less enjoyable but nice spin all the same.

Its a pity its Thursday/Friday you are going.. The local lads usually meet up on a Sunday morning at 9am at The Kingfisher NUIG.

You can have your choice of 2 runs easy 80-90k or a hard 100-140k !

Coast road between Galway to Spiddle is dangerous with a heavy volume of traffic .. It wont be bad christmas week but.

Been on the "easy" run twice and for me its far from easy! If they averaged what they say they would, ie 25km/h, I'd manage, but its more like 30km/h. Guys in this easy group that should be in the hard group cause this. The distance is also closer to 60-70. OP might make this as he just mentions he is down for Christmas, so maybe he'd make Dec 23/30.

Do they mind someone tagging along generally, I do be down quite a few weekends throughout the year?

No, no problem at all - provided you're up to it (see my comment above)!
    They leave at 9am sharp.
