Router causing issues with Modem

I have an eircom modem (silver version). Always worked fine with no issues

Connected to this I have a TP-Link Wireless N router.

Its been working fine for weeks, but today its been acting up.

When I have the TP-Link switched on and connected to the eircom modem, it causes the "Internet" light on the eircom modem to turn solid red.

As soon as I plug the TP-Link out from the mains, it works fine.

I haven't changed any settings on the router, but this did happen about a week ago but I just did a completely factory reset of everything and it fixed it. I don't wanna have to keep going through that hassle so is there something blatantly sticking out here that's causing the eircom modem to malfunction?

    Any help appreciated.

Did you try the obvious like just changing the patch lead over and trying another port on the Eircom router?

I'd also be checking the PSU that comes with the TP-Link router and if possible trying another. I've replaced a few cheap routers only to find that they work fine with another PSU.

Could be that both modem and router are in the same subnet and conflicting. Login to the Tp Link and change the Lan subnet.

Anyway, the setup you have the isn't very desirable, (double nat) where you are routing twice. It will cause problems as you have 2 firewalls, if a port gets opened on the Tp Link by Amy device using plug and play, it does not get opened on the modem and remains blocked. You are best stopping the Tp Link routing by disabling DHCP and not using the wan port (tape over it), just use the 4 lan ports. You will then be dealing with just one firewall.

If I don't use the WAN port, how will I get a net connection to the TP-link?

I've set the TP-Link up to use a static IP now instead of connecting to my eircom router via DHCP. Hopefully this will see a positive change.

I had someone ask me about this kind of thing before but I didn't realise something like this could actually happen. Would a surge protector or even a power conditioner help?

When I have set the TP-Link up to use a static IP, it was not getting supported and was giving an error.

is the tplink using a pppoe wan setting? that would cause the netopia to get a red internet light

on the tplink set the default gateway to the netopia's 192.168.1.254

set the tplink's ip address to 192.168.1.1

    disable dhcp on the netopia

set the tplink to do dhcp

set tplink's ip address pool from 192.168.1.2 to 192.168.1.253

set the tplink's dns servers to primary 8.8.8.8 and secondary 8.8.4.4

connect the tplink from lan 1 to lan 1 on the netopia

the tplink should route the traffic to & from the netopia
