    Hi all,

Might be going to the US nearer the summer for research and was having a flick through the prices there.

I've flown with EI to Boston a couple of times and found them great, I love the A330 (esp the -300 version) but the prices are seem fairly uncompetitive compared to some of the other airlines...more so than I have found before.

For example I can fly with KLM (on the 747-400...a must-fly plane for someone who enjoys planes!) by flying to AMS from Cork. I can get to JFK for €450 (checked both budgetair.ie and KLM directly).

Delta, on the 757 (not sure if that would be too comfy across the Atlantic), is about €550. They tended to be marginally cheaper than EI but I'd pay that extra margin for EI's better comfort on the A330.

BA seem pretty expensive too. Then again I suppose you have to take into account the matter of pre-clearance at Dub or SNN. Is it worth the bones of two hundred quid though?!

It's not just about the dineros, or how comfy you feel during the flight, or even where you'll clear Customs and Immigration. What about how you feel once you actually GET to Boston & what you have to do on the day you get there, or on the day after? Factor in how early you would have to get up to take a flight to Amsterdam or London, before taking your flight to Boston. When I lived in Atlanta, I had to be up at around 4am ish to catch my VERY early morning flight to London/Paris/Amsterdam, or where ever it was I was flying to Atlanta from. I was always bloody knackered when I got home.

When I flew there directly from Dublin, I got home much more relaxed and rested than if I had to get up at the butt crack of dawn to catch a flight to London or Paris first. That made a BIG difference to me if I had to be in work the next day. I used to think that it was worth it financially to fly to Atlanta via London or wherever, but those saving can be quickly eaten up when you factor in what you'll spend in your connecting airports on books, magazines, beers, cups of coffee, meals etc etc to kill time or fill your tummy. You'd be amazed how much money you can blow in airports on pretty much nothing really !

flights to Jfk with EI from dublin are 1045 and around 1500 .... the 1045 one clears custom in Ireland and gets you to JFK round 12-1pm. Boston flights from Dublin are at 1100 and 1400 during the summer with the 1400 flight clearing customs in Ireland. Ive flown on the 1100 flight twice this summer and i got through customs in about 20min which was grand. In terms of price the earlier you book the cheaper you will get it this is the same for all airlines the more seats available the cheaper it will be. Ive heard that Delta are competitive price wise but Ive never flown with them so i cant comment on the service. And only from word of mouth Ive heard good thing in relation to KLM.

Going to USA I would suggest looking at the prices with Virgin. You can get a can get a connecting flight Via london or manchester and Ive heard they provide a good service as well but i my self havnt experienced it so cant comment directly.

now in terms of baggage if you planning to bring an extra case an shop or you shop and your over weight KLM charge 75-100e for extra Piece and same for excess luggage. like wise Delta are in the same sort of price range 100e for an extra bag an not sure on the excess. Virgin is 50e for an extra bag and excess is also 50e. Aer Lingus is 50e for an extra bag with excess at 40e....

All airline operate Piece Concept baggage to USA allowing 23kg per piece and you get 1 free piece with the price of you ticket and excess is charged for bags exceeding 23kgs. and an extra bag on piece concept gets an allowence of the full 23kg..

Hope this helps you decide on an airline

    I didn't even think about luggage - that's a good point.

All flights to the US will clear customs in Dublin from end of March. Also American Airlines are starting a direct daily service from Dublin to New York JFK from June (13th I think) with a 757 and have some good offers.

Delta only fly the 757 in the off season. They fly larger dual aisle planes from about March-September. Can't remember what planes off the top of my head.

No but the only flight that have a question over it is the 11.00 to BOS.

The afternoon flights to JFK will now clear as EI are moving terminal in JFK (one that JetBlue are in so it has to clear in Ireland). Customes will be open lather becaseu JFK, BOS and ORD flights depart between 15.45-16.15. It was just JFK last summer.

Great, thanks for that. I like to take that afternoon one to JFK so this is good news.
