As a noobie, best advice is get some lessons, try a few different boats to see what suits you., and don't go out alone.

Also, don't go out alone. I know I said this one already, but its important so I'll say it again. Seriously, don't just buy a sit-on boat and head out alone. For lessons and advice, shearwater in howth are good. If you're in Dublin, that is...

Was in your situation at the start of the year, always wanted to kayak but didnt know where to start. Best choice i made was join my local kayak club here in Cork ( Phoenix Kayak Club ). Got my level 2 within 2 months and had plenty of trips throughout the year, recently finished my roll clinics successfully and am now on my way to the level 3 in the new year.
Best option for beginners is to join a club, they provide training, gear, advice and fantastic trips .

Thank guys for your answers. Consensus, join a club. I should really be given a slap around the head as it's the same advice I give for another sport. Blind enthusiasm.
