Worth having a look at this if you have an NCT due. It makes you wonder how any cars pass! Lots that can go wrong. My main reason for posting is this; I can't find a whole lot about towbars, except regarding fittings, deformities, cracks, etc. My question is about the electrics. Do they test, and if so, how, the electrical socket that you would plug your trailer/caravan into?

The only mention of "extra" lighting that I could find, was in relation to extra brake lights, provided they weren't fitted by the original manufacturer. Apparently, if these aren't working, it's NOT a fail!

Also, what is the "lock or blocking device" on a towbar. Apparently, if it's missing, it's a fail!

If you remove the ball hitch before the test, then it's not strictly a tow bar and so, should be exempt from testing?

    Any thoughts?

    Drawing Coupling
    1. Examine the drawing vehicle coupling ball/jaw and pin. Note the condition of these components and ensure that they are free from excessive wear, distortion and/or fracture.
    2. Check the body of the coupling for wear, distortion or cracks.
    3. Examine the cross/chassis member to which the coupling is mounted, paying particular attention to security and cracks.
    4. Check that the coupling assembly is securely attached to the vehicle.
    5. Check that locking or safety devices are in position and working correctly.

Could be for an older type towbar with a pin

They don't test the electric socket.

Thanks for that. I was wondering, as it doesn't say anything definitive on the website as to whether theydo or don't test the socket. It's a modern ball hitch, so no "locking device". All should be fine so.

    Thanks again.

No, they don't check the socket. My car's been tested twice with towbar fitted and socket missing. Put a new socket after that, but had no time to connect. NCT passed. Last year NCT'd with fully working socket. Passed as well. :)

Thanks folks, a definitive reply! I should be ok so, although I hope to get the electrics hooked up before the test, but good to know that I don't absolutely have to!

    Thanks again.
