Was looking at maybe getting a Fit Bit device, but I would prefer an electronic device that you could use to map cycles as well as runs.

Anyone got any suggestions? Or would an android phone be the best option?

Look at reviews of Garmin Edge or Forerunner products. Cheapest place is handtec.co.uk.

Strava app is good for shorter spins, will last three to four hours on the iphone4s
