I brought my a4 in to my indy specialist with faulty dash engine temp needle. Ran diagnostic and then changed out engine temp sensor. Cost 193 euro including 130 euro labour.

    Ripoff or going rate?

    What do people think?

I changed one on a 1.8t and it took 10 mins but that was a transverse engine, don't know what access is like on the a4.

€193 to diagnose and replace a faulty coolant temp sensor would be bordering on extortion IMO.

However very often the thermostats in these engines also like to stick open and cause erratic gauge behaviour so very often when you change the sensor you find you also need to change the thermostat as well. €193 for coolant temp sensor, o-ring, retaining clip and thermostat, o-ring and thermostat housing wouldn't be too far off the mark. Is it possible that this was done as well as the sensor?

Nope just sensor I'm afraid. It was a Specialist place with diagnostic computers for any make car. Maye their labour is dearer as a result. Pity. I will think twice now with next service.

Did you get an invoice with a breakdown of parts and labour? Was it €130 for labour, €40 for sensor then VAT on top?

Ring an Audi dealer for a quote. If the independent isn't a fair bit cheaper then it defeats the purpose of going to an independent and you were ripped off

    That's it

Well if the job was as straightforward as it usually is with these sensors (plug in, do scan, retrieve code, confirm fault, change sensor) then I'm afraid you were way over-charged compared to what you could have got it done for. We would normally charge about €75 fitted for a genuine sensor just for reference.

    Talk about a generalisation
OP those are main dealer labour rates, that was massively expensive!

Did it include work to do diagnostics or just to replace the sensor?

Very expensive! The part from VW/Audi is 30euro. Otto car parts stock the same sensor for 20euro. A litre of coolant is also required to replace that which is lost when replacing the sensor. I would ask for a receipt for a break down of charges.

Here is a few pics in a thread i wrote describing how to change it in a VW:

The part from VW is actually €36.83 + VAT. The clip and o-ring cost about another €3 + VAT on top of that.

It included diagnostic too he said. I will ring for clarification today to break down labour for all my boards buds. Pity as they had been reasonable before. I have male genitals by the way for the patronising poster.

These sensors are well known weak point on VAG cars.

I changed this sensor 2 occasions: on my previous Golf GTI 1.8T (same engine as your A4) and on my current A4 1.9 TDI.

The sensor cost me less than 40 euro from a dealer and it took me 10 minutes to replace and I am by no means a mechanic.

I have a mechanic friend who said he would have charged me for a drink to fit it if I couldn't have done it myself or 20 euro for anyone else.

As for these overrated "Diagnostic" scans, you can buy an OBD reader/scanner for 40 euro off eBay these days and its yours to keep.

So it definitely seems you were throroughly ripped off.

Tell him he's a thieving cowboy and never go to him again.

Definitely get back to them and grill them on the details. For the 40 part, 30 diagnostic and 30 labour (do you really need to top up coolant / bleed the system if you change it quickly and competently?) would give a total of €100, which would seem on the highest end for an indy

Replaced the CTS on my Rover75 myself for £12 (BMW part ordered online). That said, that was a very easy job :)

If all they did was replace that part after reading the diagnostic data then OP should name and shame. I'd imagine that a main dealer would charge prices like that, an Indy should be far far cheaper.

That's insane. The parts are £30 and takes 10 min to fit. Done it myself just recently.

They are named on the site as a good garage. Pm me and I'll let you know who they are. I rang and said it was a small job and I thought labour was excessive. He said that is a small job cost.
