Not sure if jury duty will interfere with embassy interview, what do I do?

I am currently in the latter stages of a lengthy visa process for the USA. This morning I got summoned for jury duty in late January and while I don't have official confirmation of my embassy interview date yet, I am thinking it is quite likely that it could fall in the period of time when I will be on jury duty. I am to submit some forms to the embassy soon and then they will issue me with the date. This is a hugely important interview and I highly doubt it can be rescheduled. I'm even brining my fiancée over for it.

Until I actually receive the interview date, I doubt I have any grounds for excusal. I fully intend on attending duty, but I really don't want to be in a position where I tell them I will be there, then get a letter from the embassy with a date that interferes with the duty. I have read that I could be on duty for a week or more. :/

Should I inform them now that there is a chance I would not be able to attend or flat out say I can't attend? or should I just go with it and hope the dates don't mix?

It is funny that I would get the call up now of all times. I've been here for my whole life and they decide to call me up a month before I leave the country!

If you don't have the interview date yet, just tell the embassy that you have jury duty for the week and ask politely if it can be set for a time and date before, or after the week you have jury duty.

Jury Duty is usually for one week, in some areas 2 weeks. Its a bit boring as in many cases you are just sitting there and are never called on to an actual Jury.

To answer your question if on your first day of jury duty you have your date for interview and it is during that week, then just inform them on the first day can you be excused on the interview date, there should be no issue and have copy letter. If the first day of Jury Duty and your interview clash, then ring the Office and explain what has happened and that you will be able to attend on the other days.

    Okay, thanks for the replies.

I have one more question. What if I get picked to be a juror and the trial goes on for a long time? Once I get my visa, which will be 1 week after the interview, providing that goes to plan of course, I will be leaving the country fairly quickly. I spoke to my family and some of them warned me that if I was picked I could be required for weeks and honestly I don't want to be in that position as I attempt to emigrate.

Just not a good time to be called upon. :/

Before the jury is picked the panel will be informed of the possible duration of the trial. If its a long trial after you are called but before you take the oath inform the court of your problem.
