Looking to buy a 2nd hand family car anywhere around €5K to spend.

Should I stick with a garage or go for a private sale.

Any suggestions on a make or model or places to buy.

Private sale with service history / check over by someone with a bit of knowledge about cars.

Make and model depends on your needs, style etc.

I'll play it safe and suggest something like a 2006/07 Skoda Octavia 1.9 TDi.

I work in thew UK every month for a few days - is there any benefits in buying in the UK, does it work out much cheaper with VRT hassle etc

There's a good chance it would, and you can use the online VRT calculator there and then to see if there is any advantage.

Always worth taking into account usually better spec on UK models, and better care by UK owners in general.
