Anyone ever rebuilt a speedplay pedal? If so how difficult is it and any tips for doing so?

The grease port part got torn off in a crash and some of the pedal body got filled off.

its simple but..some of the bearings in pedal body are moulded into the body and cant be replaced so you need to get a new set of pedal bodies. I recall its 1 screw holds it all together.

There was a guy on ebay/weight weenies selling spares like bearings, spindles etc. cheaper than the speedplay branded spares and had very detailed rebuild instructions but has since taken them down.

I might have the instructions saved at home and will PM you if I find them.

I 'tried' rebuilding a set... Mine had lost all internal grease and completely locked up (ie. pedal would not rotate by hand on the spindle; to the point of causing a knee injury).

So I ordered the grease (and gun) and new bearings (not cheap at €25 or so) and set about taking them apart. It was a little tricky to get the spindle out of the pedal body as it was seized but in theory its only a few easy steps. Unfortunately it was only at this point that I could identify that the old bearings had worn a grove into the spindle rendering the latter inoperable even with new bearings.

I would say that if you set about this before its too late then it would be a relatively straight forward job. Using the grease gun (or similar) is straightforward too.

As an aside, I've seen people online say that they grease their Speedplay pedals with a plastic syringe, the kind of syringes that are easily available, and cheap, from (some) chemists. I came across a video clip of someone using a syringe on their pedals and it looks just as effective as the far more expensive Speedplay grease gun (which I have). I can't recall for sure but I think that 5mm syringe tips are the ones that fit, but a Google search should throw back the details easily enough as it seems to be a popular topic of discussion. Such discussions also touch on suitable, and cheaper, alternatives to the grease recommended by Speedplay, which is fairly generic synthetic grease from what I remember.
