High5 4:1 works for me, but other brands seem to be cheaper for an equivalent quantity (measured in 500ml bidons), any recommendations?

    Where do you buy it?
I often buy it and shopping around is needed to get the best price.

Prices can range from € 30-50 depending on where you buy.
Wheelworx (€60) are always very expensive - How they can even try to sell it at this price is beyond me.
    Cyclesuperstore are €39
    Chainreactions are €43

I always find the best price at the edge sports in Cork
    http://www.theedge-sports.com/store/ have 1.6 Kg for €34.
Spend over €50 and its free delivery by courier, always arrives the next day.

I think thats a prety decent price to be honest

I've tried a few others based on price, powerbar and squeezy, but have moved back to High5 4:1 which I find that bit better. Not so much in terms of performance, but the powerbar particularly doesn't seem to dilute well, with salty residue left at the end. You could probably mix your own easy enough, if you found a very finely ground salt.

Currently €31.54 from Wiggle, although seeing a competitive price from Cork, I'll give them a go next time out.

give a guy a chance. wheelworx have the 1.6kg tub listed at 30.50 on their website and my impression is that they have been consistently keenly priced.

RRP for the 1.6kg tub is €35.

As a recovery drink I prefer the Kinetica powders but I like the High 5 4:1 as a drink option on the longer spins and during racing.

In fairness to above poster CRC are claiming RRP is €53 and 20% off which may seem like a good deal. at the same time there is an error on the Wheelworx website showing €61 for a tub when you go to buy from the cart.

Try and buy it..... Thats the base price!!!
You add on €12 to get the 600g and another €30 for the tub.
Maybe its a glitch on the website, but add one tub to your basket and see what total you get. I've tried to get it for €30.50 but it doesn't happen.
False advertising from what I can see

Saw that myself, I'd say its a web site bug though. Maybe drop them a line.

For anyone who takes this kind of thing into account when deciding what to buy, it may be worth noting that the Kinetica products are made by an Irish owned company (part of Carbery Group).

You could always try High5 8:1 - works out at half the price ;)

Make your own. It's just maltrodextrin ,protein and some flavouring. If you want to get all fancy you could use some fructose along with the maltrodextrin. You should be able to make a kg of 4:1 for less than a tenner.

60-60g of sugar and a quarter teaspoon of salt. Works for me:

Sugar can be too sweet to be palatable and it's not as easy to absorb/digest as other carbs like maltrodextrin.

I have had the misfortune of trying a few Kinetica products alright.

The calorie and carb contents of 500ml of water and 2 medium bananas are higher than 1 sachet of High5: 220Kcal & 42grams vs 180kcal & 36 grams respectively.

Bananas from Superquinn cost 30c vs 1.30 for a High5 sachet (or about 88c based on the cheapest 1.5kg tub )

True, but what you are missing is the protein content of the 4:1.

While not performance enhancing, added protein is supposed to help reduce muscle fatique in longer endurance events.

As a part of recovery, surely, but not during the ride ?

How long though? 2 bananas should be enough for 100km with protein in food/ drink afterwards.

For recovery, 1.5 litres of flavored milk in Superquinn for 2.50euro. So bottom line about 3 euro per 100km ride.

Protein during the ride. By consuming it with carbs its reckoned that there is less muscle damage caused during exercise, makes for easier recovery etc.

Closest I could find to the original science reports

I think as a pure recovery drink the Kinetica is better though.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,013 ✭✭✭Ole Rodrigo

I'd still take from those reports that protein is possibly important after 3 hours of exercise, and perhaps thats even less likely with cycling because the muscle damage would be minor compared with, say, running. One of them also mentions combining protein and carbs to make digestion easier during exercise - this would be subjective.

Have never tried Kinetica, I used to use For Goodness Shakes which were really nice but overpriced.

There's probably a much higher protein content in the whore's knickers after a busy night though, so I'm not sure I'd recomend them as a suitable alternative.

Try making your own drink. You can buy the malto, fructose and protein from myprotein.co.uk and then mix whatever concentration you want to. You can even buy pure caffeine and add some of this (but be careful with it):eek::eek:.
