What is the procedure for full braces treatment?

I've been doing some reading around the web about what to expect from the first appointment. Basically it seems that getting things like x-rays and molds/impressions of teeth before treatment is fairly standard - this was mostly from experiences of patients in the USA though. So I'm just wondering what's the normal procedure in Ireland/UK for orthodontic treatment? Mostly I am wondering about the diagnosis etc that takes place before the braces are actually put on.

EDIT: just to clarify, I mean full treatment lasting 18+ months, not just 6 month smiles type of treatment.

    Thanks for any replies.

When I went for my first consultation, the orthodontist made mouldings, preformed X-rays, spoke with me about what I needed to have done, explained about options, then a couple of weeks later I recieved a full report with pricing etc

Thanks, dublingirl83. Was the cost of your x-ray and mouldings included in the full price, or was it charged as an optional extra?

Also I'm wondering if it's normal to sign a contract or consent form before starting treatment?
It seems to be in the US, but maybe this is only if the person has health insurance?

I paid 80 stg as getting mine done up north, for the consultation, that included X-ray etc.
when I recieved the report in the post outling different brace options ie, Invisalign, metal, ceramic etc and prices there was a consent form in there too.
When I had my appointment yesterday I handed in the consent.
The consent was just about me taking responsibility of looking after the braces and that I was aware if I didn't, there could be risks of damaging my teeth.
