    Hi,

What options does a person have who cannot collect their JSB as they were admitted to hospital suddenly?

SWO phones are just ringing out.

    Thanks

Can some one else call in and explain the situation.

I finally got through on the phone.
They said, if the claimant cannot collect it from the Post Office themselves then they are not eligible for JSB and need to apply for Illness Benefit instead.
Illness Benefit will take weeks to process - and this means that the claimant will receive no payments at all until late January.

Talk about kicking a person whilst they are down.

Well, the stipulation is that the person must be able for, and actively seeking employment, so if they're going to be in hospital for a while then they really should be going for illness benefit. It doesn't take all that long to process it, either. Once you hand in your intermediary cert (the second cert), it is paid within a day or two.

On the other hand, if it's a short stay, JSB remains in the post office for three days.

You can apply for supplementary welfare allowance while waiting for illness benefit as they are on the system this payment should be quick.Contact your local CWO.

Thanks for the replies and information folks. Much appreciated.
Hopefully, the person will be discharged in time to collect the JSB.

It must be awful for somebody on the dole who gets sick and admitted to hospital with bills to pay and trying to sort this out from a hospital bed if they have nobody to assist.
