    I have been in oz for over a year and my travel insurance runs out on xmas day. I have just received a call from home my mother has been taking to hospital and she is going to be operated on today. i can get flights that will get me home for the 23rd for about $2000 my policy says

    ACE will pay

    1.cancellation, curtailment or rearrangement costs up to the amount
    shown in the schedule of benefits if it becomes necessary to cancel, curtail
    or rearrange a Trip Due To:
    i. the death, serious injury, sudden illness, complications in
    pregnancy (as diagnosed by a Qualified Medical Practitioner
    or specialist in obstetrics) of the Insured, Immediate Family
    Members
    , Travelling Companions or any person upon whom the
    Insured’s trip depends;

    long shot?

    No, from what you say here you should be OK to claim. But why ask us? Notify ACE that you'll be making a claim, and try to get them to accept it. They'll probably ask for a letter from your Mum's GP, and of course you'll have to book and pay for your flight without knowing that ACE has accepted the claim.

    Get her hospital to fax details to ACE, i.e. serious condition, hospitalisation and surgery required. Try to get them to pay up front for the flight as claiming back is always harder. Provide them with details of when you were due to return ie ticket. Good Luck.
