Studying for theory test?

    Hi all,

Girlfriend going through the paces to get her license, currently studying for her theory test and to be honest, I am absolutely shocked by the poor quality of the study material.

We went to Eason, got the RSA "Rules of the road" book and the Quiz CD; While the book gives a good general picture of the rules, it looks like there is no material that actually EXPLAINS things, rather than just show questions and answers. I saw there is another book available, but it's apparently just the paper version of the CD content.

Is there any good book/software we can get that will give proper explanation for the various situation, so that the learner driver can UNDERSTAND the principles and concepts, rather than mindlessly memorize answers and hope they get the questions they remember asked in the quiz?

i did a theory test for a motorbike a few years ago, and then again for a car the other day. all i can say is the best thing to do is get the CD as it is practically as close to doing the actual test as you can get.
the book is a different approach, as you do the test on the computer so practicing on computer makes sense

having said that, i got the latest CD, went through the 16 categories (over 300 questions) which was supposed to cover everything.
then i did 5 practice tests (dress rehearsals) and in each one i saw several questions i hadnt seen before )-:<

regardless i got 39 or 40 out of 40 on them all (you need 35 to pass).

then in the real test i got 36 out of 40 as there was at least 20 questions i hadnt seen before. i aint slow or short on memory either so i was pissed off with this carryon, i should have got 40/40. and them in the test centre couldnt tell me what questions i got wrong /-:

anyway. the CD also gives a brief explanation of what the right answer is and why. an experienced driver who passed all these tests in recent years (mom and dad no good they be set in their ways and got their license back in the lucky-bag days) or pay an instructor is the best bet to learn the why's imo

The best thing to do in my opinion is to just go through the theory test book. The CD is ok but you could go through the test dozens of times and still come across questions you've never seen before.

With the book, you can start on page 1 and go through each section at your own pace, it has every question on it with all possible answers, the correct answer is marked, and after flippng through it a couple of times you'll recognise any questions when they come up in the test. Anybody I know who actually put a few hours into going through the book got 40/40.

The rules of the road book is good to have and know for obvious reasons but it won't prepare you for the theory test at all.

Have you tried the practice section of the CD
if you use the graphs from the results you can see where
she is weakest and you can call up questions for that section only
I prefer the CD but remember the question bank now contains 100's
of questions and it would take a while to guarantee seeing all of them.
PM me if you need any more.
