I hate it. I'm so tired right now. My brain is fried. I'm going to take a few sleeping tablets now and hope to get some sleep but I hate taking them because of the hangover.

    Has anyone overcome insomnia?

    I've tried everything. :(

No I've never heard of anybody overcoming insomnia before.

Woooo, cramming for exams right now, listening to bad radio and drinking too much coffee.

And I'll feel terrible in the morning. But I'll waste time complaining on boards.

OP, I suggest you watch the Al Pacino thrillerInsomnia, it'll put ya to sleep all right.

    Don't go online.
Go for a walk or mini run in the evening.
    Read a book before bed.

    Sleep time

Weed is the online thing that puts me to sleep. I wish I could get it on prescription. I don't smoke it.

I hear Testicular Cancer meetings help with it.

    Particularly if Meatloaf is there.

Problem is it can be a downward spiral. Once you have trouble sleeping 1 or 2 nights you expect to have trouble sleeping and the end result is not being able to sleep..

Weed is great for putting you to sleep, nothing nicer than having a sliff and heading to bed. I find though I develop a dependency on it and when the weed is gone it takes me a few days to be able to easily fall asleep so I'd only ever suggest it as an occassional thing.

Either way, for me a book and exercise always sends me out for the count.

Take a hot shower, put a fresh pillow case on your pillow & relax.
Switch off the computer, phone etc & put on some classical music.
Listen to it while lying in your normal sleeping position.
Breathe deeply, close your eyes & go with the music.
    You'll soon drop off.

(if I wasn't up working I'd be doing the same)

Not trying to give medical advice but here's some medical advice.

Using sleeping tablets is very much treating the symptom rather than treating the cause.

Try to figure out why you think you need sleeping tablets and work on that.

    That'll be €50.

I have insomnia as well. I just learned to live with it.

Xanax doesn't "cure" insomnia but it knock me clean out for a few hours.

The Z-drugs are terrible. Ambien & Zimovane never helped me get to sleep at all, just turned me into a mindless zombie.

    Try going to bed Ted.

    That might work.

Not advocating meds but Zimovane is the only one that sometimes works for me no hangover(saying that it is 5am). Tried much stronger ones and didn't work for me. As for weed, complete opposite reaction. Not a hope of getting any sleep.

IceFjoem's idea is a good one

Try saying your times tables at a particular speed & Rythmn & go up to say 16 or 17..
    3x1= 3, 3x2=6, etc up to 3 x 16 = 48
If you break the speed or Rythmn you have to go back & start again. Work your way through the tables ; it's boring but unless you're a maths genius makes you concentrate & often works for me.
    Not tonight obviously!

Do you find your mind can't settle?

Do you have a lot of thoughts? Worried about things?

Secret is to clear your mind and try to not think about anything, even the fact that you can't get to sleep.

When I had it, I used to lie there and think about loads of things that happened that day, or things I had to do the next day or whatever. My mind was buzzing and it wouldn't let me switch off.

I used to works shifts years ago and had terrible sleep problems. Doc prescribed zimovane and the first night I took one, I slept for over 10 hours and was late for work next day. I then took just half a tablet when I needed it and its knock me out within 20 minutes. The only side effect I had was an aftertaste when I swallowed the next day for around 3 or 4 hours after I got up but it was worth it to get some proper sleep.

About this time 2 years ago I had bad insomnia and needed sleeping tablets to get me to sleep, otherwise I would spend all night awake staring at the ceiling.

Someone suggested acupuncture as a solution and, out of desperation, I decided to try it. I was told there was an 'imbalance of energies' (or something like that...) in my system and acupuncture would sort it out. I had my doubts, but over the course of about 6 weeks and 1 visit to the acupuncturist per week, I was sorted.

As I was getting the sessions, I was slowly, week by week, cutting down on the tablets, until I was down to about 1/4 tab per night. Then I was able to drop them completely, and still get a good nights sleep.

So, acupuncture worked for me (don't know how!) and I would have no hesitation using it again if necessary.

Has anyone overcome insomnia? I've tried everything. :(

I'm a life long sufferer and the closest thing to 'overcome' it is to accept it.

There are nights when you just dont NEED sleep I now believe, but you force yourself because you feel you MUST (to be able to function in work next day etc).
It's the deliberate struggling against being awake that causes the very anxiety which keeps you awake in the first place.
Sometimes you just have to accept it's not going to happen and get out of bed and do some chores/preparation for the morning ahead.

It's really hard to quiet the mind at night but if you can concentrate for long enough to do this, it does help:

Breath in through the nose and expand your belly (this is correct breathing).
In bed, lye flat on your back and hold your breath for 4 seconds, release. Repeat a few times then increase to 5, 6 then up to 10.
There's something in this that starves the brain of oxygen and knocks you out slightly. Which is what you want :D

You can also clench/tense your muscles, head to toe (and everything in between). You just clench and release. I saw this in a documentary once.

I occassionally take an anti-histamine which believe it or not helps to induce a bit of drowwwzzzinesss :)

Have you tried the self choke hold method, medical name( exfilliate numnumed), you should be able to find someone local who could show you how it is carried out, 1 2 3 now sleeeeeeeeeeeeep, 4 5 6 and your back in the roooooooooooooom,

how do you feel now, relaxed to bits I am guessing, don't mention it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,184 ✭✭✭3ndahalfof6

    Why?

The start of Stephen Frys gadget show had a gadget on it to help you sleep, and read your sleeping patterns, (well what could be happening while you are sleeping) not getting enough good quality sleep.
