Not sure it this is in people's area of expertise but I'm looking for some advice on treating dry mouth. It is caused by anti-depressant medication I am taking that I do not want to stop. The situation is getting serious at the moment as I have receding gums that I cannot control, even though my oral hygiene is good.

I've seen lots of products out there, gel for moisturising, saliva replacement gel, mouthwashes. The mouthwash I have tried works for about five minutes. Any advice would be appreciated.

    Chewing gum produces saliva.

One cause of dry mouth can be too much breathing through the mouth instead of nose breathing.

Also there can be dietary causes. So maybe try experimenting with eliminating certain foods for days or weeks and see if it helps.

The main thing is not to substitute sugary drinks or acidic drink for saliva. Plain water is the best thing to use. Without saliva you can develop very severe decay in a short period of time so very good oral hygiene and diet control are important.

There are artificial saliva's (Biotene is an irish one) hard to get but prices medical hall do them. I have some patients that swear by them. Also getting the dentist to make fluoride trays can be beneficial.

Thanks for the advice. By "acidic drink" do you mean fruit juices? I probably drink some fruit juice twice a day with meals. My main worry at the moment is receding gums.

Receeding gums is another issue altogether. Sounds like you should go see a dentist to get advice.....defo.
