Ok so am I the only one who gets extremely pissed off with noisy eaters? With every loud smacking of their lips I get angrier and angrier. Do these people thrive on their ability to eat like some sort of mentally challenged dog chowing into some porridge? Is it so much to ask them to stop eating their food in this painfully annoying manner? Every time I'm beside someone like this I get the urge to shoot my brains out just to not have to suffer anymore. PLease say I'm not the only one who this drives mad!

ha I feel much better getting letting it out now. I had to painfully endure a solid two hours of a noisy eater with a seamlessly endless box of popcorn before that rant.

We'll be long enough dead to worry about the noise we make eating food, what annoys me are intolerant killjoys who make other peoples lives a misery with their hypercritical moaning.

ha fair enough doolox, but this is something that is a pet peeve for me and I'm sure there are many people with pet peeves and no matter how much they dont want something to annoy them it will.

Ha the can of worms is open...I dont mind a little bit of noise but when it sounds like youre performing oral sex to your food its gets annoying. I remember when I was younger I asked my sister could she eat quieter....it was the angriest I had ever seen her

Google 'misophonia'. Granted we all get pissed off with slurpy noisy eaters but when it turns to rage...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 478 ✭✭Duvetdays

I used to work with this guy that had the mankiest yellow plaque teeth and he'd sit across the table from you in the canteen with his filthy dirty anorak on eating with his fingers, he was the noisiest eater reminded me of a wildebeest grazing in the Serengeti. Minging.

    QFT OP.
am diagnosed at a profound level of hyperacusis-the stress from sounds often trigger epilepsy seizures, one of the worst sounds of mine to deal with is sloppy noisy eating and am living in a place full of folks who try to cram food down as fast as possible or they leave their mouth hanging on the floor resulting in the agony, the horrible noise.
dad was always the same so have just left the room whenever people eat,its really difficult getting people to 'shut their mouths',they dont hear it like outsiders may do.

perhaps use something that has a good recording function, try recording them on the sly and playing it back to them so they can hear it from another persons view.
close up filming them on the sly to woud be good for them to see what they are like.
be a good sport and print them off some sheets on oral motor exercises, slack oral motor skills cause a slack mouth and poor breathing control.

there is actualy a name for people who have a hatred of sound and another for people who have a sensitivity to only certain sounds such as noisy eating but we not allowed to make any medical label suggestions here.

its not noisy eaters that annoys me, its the lad at work who continues to take
two bites from his sandwich, followed immediately by a gulp of tea.

I feel that OP, to the point of irrationality probably. I have to leave the room or put my earphones in if someone's eating loudly. It probably is misophonia but it's definitely quite widespread!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 354 ✭✭Hollzy

I don't mind noisy eaters but it was my understanding that everyone learns as a child not to chew with their mouth open? It's disgusting!

Looking into it, it does sound like I might have it. Ha I try not let it annoy me but I can't help it

I admit I am a noisy eater but I can't help it and to be fair it's not my fault. I have a problem with my jaw bones which should have been fixed quite easily as a child (before the bones stopped growing) but my parents were too cheap to pay for the braces. So now my only option is surgery which ain't happening because I'll be left with scars on my face.

I tend to eat a bit noisily if I am eating by myself. I don't do it on purpose.. I think.

But yes, I do hate teh **nomnomnom** :pac:

    Absolutely hate it.
It's disgusting, inconsiderate and very easily avoided (excepting people with actual, related medical conditions).

There's no excuse for making everyone in the room listen to food slosh around your mouth. Eat like a civilised person you uncouth so-and-so.

My sister bangs her spoon of the bowl with every spoonful of breakfast. Same with forks and picking up food from a plate.

I have the type of mouth that makes noise voluntarily when I eat. I can't help it, it drives me nuts to hear myself eating and crunching loudly.
So i can only eat soft things like burgers, chips, lobster and chocolate. It sucks.

It's fcuking unbearably irritating and the fcukers know it too.

You should try eat a hot meal around my father. He sounds like a horse walking on a cobbled street in Edwardian London.

the other side of the coin would be...we're only here for a short time why endure something that annoys you.

I am with the OP on this one, if you want to eat like an animal maybe you should eat out of a trough or doggie bowl, close your mouth when you eat its just good manners.

Spish.. spish.. spish.. spish.. spish.. *random sneeze sends all the food in my mouth flying onto the table and the floor*

Or when someone is eating something with a fork and rubbing it off their teeth every time. Wrecks my head. Or drinking from a bottle and making this horrible sort of "bloop" noise as they take it away from their mouth? I don't know many who do it but it's SO annoying.

I wish it didn't get on my nerves though, it's not like people enjoy being driven up the wall.

I agree with you. Some people suffer more from this than others.

Actually in some cultures, such as Japanese, slurping soup is accepted as a polite way of letting your host know you enjoy the food!

It used to drive me mad until I realised that 2 of the people I know who do this are actually tongue-tied and have no choice. A LOT of people have undiagnosed tongue-ties and they cannot swallow as well as others. Now before I say: 'would you please eat like a human' I ask if they are tongue-tied :)
That said, this kind of bad habit is hard to kick.
