Claiming tax on rent paid

This is probably a little late but from October 2007 to May 2010 I paid between €1400 to €1100 a month rent to a private landlord. I never claimed the tax back on this (silly I know).

I belief the maximum amount payable back per person per year is €400. Although i am not sure. However we were cohabiting at the time and my question is can is split the claim between the two of us. For example do I get the Rent 1 form and split the amount between us and submit the individual forms for each of us thus maximising our claim.

I appreciate I can't claim the tax back for 2007 and am running out of time for 2008 so any opinions would be greatly appreciated.

Yes you'll need to each separately complete a Rent 1 for 2008,09 & 10, splitting the rent as appropriate. You'll need the propertyaddress, and the name and address of the landlord.

If registered, it'll be faster to claim online on PAYEanytime.

I got mine back recently for 2010 and 2011.. i would highly recommend setting up a PAYE anytime account, I got the refund straight into my bank account within a few days... If you were sharing the rent then just input the amount that you actually paid, it will.ask you for the amount for the full yr so multiply the monthly by 12..you will get tax back on the 1st 2000 paid at 20%, hence 400, that was for 2010, the percentage falls for 2011 and again this yr.. you will need your landlords name adress and pps number
