Sequels get a lot of abuse. In fairness, many are terrible, but Empire magazine posted a list a while back of the 50 Greatest Ever Sequels. It shows just how many decent sequels there are out there.

    50: Shrek 2
    49: Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey
    48: Infernal Affairs II
    47: Airplane 2: The Sequel
    46: Star Trek: First Contact
    45: The Naked Gun 2 1/2
    44: Hellboy II
    43: 28 Weeks Later
    42: Blade II
41: Nightmare On Elm Street 3: The Dream Warriors
    40: The Four Musketeers
    39: National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation
38: Die Hard With A Vengeance
    37: Halloween III
    36: Mission: Impossible III
35: Back To The Future Part III
34: The Lost World: Jurassic Park
33: Gremlins 2: The New Batch
    32: Scream 2
    31: Return to Oz
    30: Lethal Weapon 2
    29: Dawn Of The Dead
    28: Manon Des Sources
    27: Addams Family Values
    26: The Color Of Money
25: Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade
24: Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
23: Back To The Future Part II
    22: Spider-Man II
21: Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi
    20: Desperado
    19: Day Of The Dead
    18: The Bourne Ultimatum
    17: Wes Craven's New Nightmare
    16: The French Connection 2
15: Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
14: Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom
    13: Batman Returns
12: Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan
    11: X2
    10: Evil Dead II
    09: Superman II
    08: Before Sunset
    07: The Bourne Supremacy
06: Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back
    05: The Dark Knight
    04: Toy Story 2
    03: Terminator 2: Judgment Day
    02: The Godfather Part II
    01: Aliens

Worth a discussion! The one unforgivable omission, however, is Sergio Leone's For a Few Dollars More (or, indeed, The Good, the Bad and the Ugly).

This whole idea of the Dollars or Man With No Name "trilogy" is just a marketing gimmick.

If TGTBATU is a sequel to FAFDM, then Casino is a sequel to Goodfellas.

The Lost World? pfffft thats not even a good sequel never mind a great one, has a few good moments the rest is like someone other than Spielberg directed it. The top 5 are all perfect examples of how to do sequels properly though.

Some shocking sequels in the list to be fair.

Also the omission of The Exorcist 3 is unforgivable, especially considering some of the dross listed.

Are they really sequels? Not for me as they where all shot at the same time basically and all 3 movies make up one epic story. Which is the way it was intended.

I'm very surprised at Toy Story 3 not being included in that list.

2 star trek films on there, colour me surprised.

    Both are great films though.

X Men 2 and MI-III make the list. Nice, love those.

Some absolute dross in there. 28 Weeks Later was awful by comparison to the first one.

Had to read multiple times before I could finally believe that Halloween 3 was put into this list.

How many are better than the originals though is another question?

    Pretty bland and unsurprising list.

It's just basically "Decent sequels to good movies with a few shìt ones thrown in because we need to round off 50 movies."

you could apply that logic to every sequel, alien is the story of ripleys life, so why should aliens be considered a sequel when its actually a continuation of part 1,

Can't believe there are Harry Potter films in there, and they aren't even the best Harry Potter films!

To be honest, I think the list shows the exact opposite - out of the 50 movies listed (in the entire history of cinema), at least 30 are pretty awful.

Alien was a one-off horror movie...for Cameron to take the concept and turn it into a horro-action movie with fantastic pacing was quite different than Jackson's adaptation of 3 books into 3 movies, essentially one long movie with no change in style or genre throughout any of the 3 movies.

    Totally different really.

The alien franchise also shows how easy it is to mess up a sequel, return to the closed corridor horror genre for 3 was a bore and the attempt by that french guy at recapturing the macho squad action of aliens in resurrection missed the mark completely (not even Ron Pearlman and Joss Whedon could save that mess).

Before Sunset is miles better than Before Sunrise.. but both are in my top 10..

Surely it should be judged on sequel to the original?
There's a good few part 3s in there which I'd consider part of a series.

For a bunch of self appointed film buffs their knowledge knows no bounds.

According to Empire, when did a prequel become a sequel?

    Happy searching now :)

My thoughts exactly. I've seen 33 of them. Of those, 13 I would say are poor or worse. 13 I would class as good and only 7 of them I would put in a 5 star category. If that list is actually representitive of the 50 greatest sequels of all time, then sequels clearly do not work!

Just noting one omission from the list - why are there no bond films in there? Surely Goldfinger, Goldeneye and Casino Royale at least should be in there!

Mad Max 2 was a great sequel.Loved it big time, way better than part 1.
Mad Max (1) has'nt dated well IMO.

If TGTBATU is a sequel to FAFDM, then Casino is a sequel to Goodfellas.

If fairness, Robert De Niro plays a character called Sam 'Ace' Rothstein in Casino, based on Frank Lawrence "Lefty" Rosenthal, and the film is set in Nevada.

In Goodfellas he plays Jimmy Conway, based on Jimmy Burke, and the film is set in New York.

Both characters and films have little in common.

A Fistful of Dollars and For A Few Dollars More are both set in along the Mexican border, during the same period. Eastwood plays a gunman in both, and dresses identically in both (poncho, cheroot, hat etc.).

Sergio Leone and producer Alberto Grimaldi only wanted to make For A Few Dollars More when Eastwood agreed.

The term 'Man With No Name' may have been a marketing invention, but Eastwood plays the same character in both. Face it, For A Few Dollars More is a sequel.

Temple of Doom was set before Raiders of the Lost Ark.

The DeNiro segments of The Godfather Part II were flashbacks/prequel material.

No mention of Hannibal. Great movie.

What category is Butch and Sundance: The Early Days?
