    Hi there,

We're having a problem with our main lights fuse, it keeps blowing every time we replace it. It lasts maybe 5 mins but eventually blows out leaving us without any main lights in the house

All plug sockets are ok though so its just a mains lights issue

Apart from physically changing the fuses themselves, is there anything else we can try before calling out an electrician?

We have an oldschool type fuse board with the screw in type porcelain fuses so don't have a switchboard or anythng like that

    Thanks in advance

Try to narrow down the problem.
Switch all light switches to the off position.
Then replace the fuse. If this fuse does not blow after a while switch on one light. Then wait to see if the fuse blows. Repeat this procedure until you (hopefully) have identified the problem light.

This problem may be due to water ingress, so have a close inspection of outdoor lights.

If the problem light is identified it may be possible to find the issue with a visual inspection (with the power isolated).

I was just about to suggest an outdoor light but 2011 beat me to it. If you don't have an outdoor light was there a cable tun and not connected.

Thanks for the replies. Still Light-less though I'm afraid

I tried to check each light by the process of elimination but even if we left all the lights switched off, within 5 mins the fuse would blow by itself whch is a bit weird

We do have an outdoor light out the back but that still works even when the fuse blows so it must be on a different connection

We have a sparks coming out tomorrow so hopefully he'll get it sorted for us then

Even this narrows it down a bit. now you know that the problem is not between the light switch and the light fitting for every light on that circuit. This saves the bother of inspecting the light fittings themselves.

Sounds like a sensible option at this stage.
