06 1.6 petrol Jetta shaking/shuddering when accelerating on 3rd gear

    Hi

My 06 1.6 petrol Jetta is shaking/shudering when accelerating in 3rd gear. Has not happened in any other gear yet. Feels like I'm driving in too high gear but I'm not. Shuddering stops when at 60km and I push it to 4th gear. Not shuddering permanently but intermittent.

Car is 80K km on it, was serviced my vw in May and has only done 5000km since. They said no need to change timing belt at the time as milage is low on it.

Any ideas what is causing this?

Engine/gearbox mounts i thought, but since it is only in 3rd gear, i don't know.
Unbalanced wheel would rather cause vibration on the wheel than shaking, and it depends on speed rather than gear.
Is the engine working fine - no misfires/lack of power?

engine seems ok, power normal. sounds fine

Very difficult to say...I'll just throw a wild one, since it seems it's not the engine, electronics or a wheel: how's the clutch? Probably not the problem, but the only thing that remains...other than something being wrong with the gearbox itself.

On a second thought, have you done a test were you use all the RPMs through the gears? What I mean is find a nice, long, straight empty road and accelerate to the redline through 1st, 2nd and 3rd...there may be an electronic/feeding issue that only happens in a certain power band; Power band that you happen to use the most in 3rd gear. Of course it would be ideal to try to redline it in 4th and 5th too, but...well you get me :)

I wonder is it speed related rather than 3rd gear related? If the fault only occurs in 3rd gear throughout it's range and in none of the other gears it has to be a gearbox issue.

anyway - just noticed I'ld not replied here

spark plugs and cables replaced by VW and all ok now. Misfiring it seems

Therefore it wasn't 3rd gear related and more RPM/speed related as previously suggested.

Timing belt is due at 90k or every 4 years! You should get it done before you regret it.

I asked them that in VW and they said not due until 120k, 86k on it

You should get that in writing so as its 4 years regardless of mileage.

Would a tensioner pulley cause it to judder? like if the bearings were worn or some missing.

120k is the diesel engine, its 90 for the 1.4 and 1.6 engines, but 4 years for all. Time for you find a new garage

I'll say it when collecting. What price you think for timing belt? Does it have to be main dealer?

Phoenix motors do it for €370 all in with genuine parts and 2 year warranty. Non genuine water pumps give a lot of trouble.
