ANdroid equivalent to Nokia maps

    Hi guys,
have just moved from a Nokia smartphone over to a samsung android phone. The Nokia maps platform was brilliant - just download the country map you want and it had full navigation, which included all street addresses/business names etc - all of which needed no data connection.
I've tried out Google Maps and Navfree so far on my Samsung. Google maps only lets you save small portions for offline usage - I want to be able to download France for holidays next year!. Navfree tells me I need a data connection to search - and the detail of the maps doesn't seem great, lots of roads aren't named on the maps.
Is there any map app that lets me download a full country, be able to do searches for addresses/businesses, and also have navigation to these addresses - all with no data connection?
Maybe I naively thought Android would offer the same service my Nokia did?
    thanks

Not right now. Nokia are able to do that because they own Navteq which has been one of the biggest map providers for gps systems for years. Id say Google will offer it eventually since theyve done their own maps but they also want to keep people online.
Youd have to buy one of the GPS apps like co-pilot or tomtom

Thanks Blobbie, will check out Osmond.

Thanks Chinholio - don't mind paying a few quid for an application, its data charges while abroad that I want to avoid - do you know will co-pilot and tom tom let me navigate etc with no connection? Guess with tom-tom you have to pay for each country map, and it only lasts for a year though?

edit - just looked on app store, don't know if I'd call €45 for tom-tom just a few quid.

I am with Vodafone, and their Passport option gives you 50Mb of data a day roaming in most of europe for €1.99 which is enough for surfing boards, news etc as well as Sat Nav and emails etc.

I used google navigation in concert with that to drive to the med coast of France and back in the summer and it never missed a beat.

You could get Western Europe maps on CoPilot for €29. The maps are then continuously updated.

OSM data but better UI and nav than any other free one I tried.

Navit is another but I prefer Navigator now.

I use copilot as my offline GPS. Works really well. Interface can be a little clunky is my only problem

Have said it before, but Route 66 is my favourite - about a fiver a month for short term use.

Hi ive recently just switched to android from windows phone, and am wondering is there any new/updated apps since this thread was started that has the offline map storage (for low data usage) and voice navigation for all of Ireland that rivals/similar to Nokia Drive. The app doesn't have to be free, but I dont want to pay anything crazy for the app. Max id pay would be about a tenner for the app, but free apps preferable obviously.

    Thanks.

Hiya. Yes, on one of the suggestions given to me I downloaded Osmand. It does the job fine for me. A slight limitation is that some of the smaller roads/estates aren't named, so might not come up in a search. Voice navigation works fine.

The basic version is free and gives you (I think) 5 free map downloads. Ireland counts as one download. I paid for the Osmand+ version, around €6 I think, as I was using it for my holidays and needed to download a good few maps.

Sure give the free version a go, let me know if you have any queries on it.

Back when I had the Samsung Wave and it's BADA system, the only other offline map app available for it was Sygic. Now on my Sony Xperia S I got the Android equivalent and I find it excellent. Instructions are very clear.

    This too shall pass.
