As you may or may not know I have been looking at a nearly new car, was looking at the very nice and very well reviewed Mazda 6 top spec model. One thing that absolutely made my toes curl was that the car does not come with a spare wheel in any shape or form?

Anyone else totally uncomfortable with that idea? I would hate to have my missus stuck on the side of the road with a sidewall damage and no spare wheel.....

Call me old skool and living a champagne lifestyle on lemonade money for most of my life :D I have not seen many new cars so if this is the new thing then I dont like it.

Basically you get a tiny air compressor and a bottle of gunk (not unlike that slime stuff for punctures) you get a puncture you stop fill the tyre wait for it to set and drive to a garage. Where they clean out the tyre prolly for a price and patch it..and then you buy a new bottle from a mazda dealer WTF!

All this for a €30,000 grand car more or less.....and even if you wanted to buy a spare tyre and lower spec rim (not an alloy) it will not sit flush under the boot space!!!!!

A lot of cars are going this way unfortunately. All in a bid to shave as much off the CO2 emissions and increase the MPG. I would be getting a spare if it was me, a can of gunk isn't an ideal solution.

Is there room for a full sized spare? if so you can at least buy a wheel and jack. i iam looking into buying a new car for July next year and I am also surprised at this. The Ford Mondeo hasn't even got room for a spare, all you get is a motorbike wheel on a 30 k + car.Afraid it's a deal breaker for me. No spare,no deal.

Very few cars come with a full size spare wheel these days irrespective of how much it cost when new. Given the amount of times a spare wheel is used (I've seen nearly brand new spare wheels in 10 year old cars) it is cheaper for manufacturers to fit a space saver (which is what you have) which is lighter for emmission ratings and doesn't take up as much space in the boot. The can of tyre weld is just the next step in that line of thinking.

My own car doesn't come with a tyre well in the booth as it was fitted with run on flat tyres which by definition should get you a max distance of 100km on a punctured tyre as the side walls are reinforced meaning they deflate at a slower rate. I bought a space saver/jack and put them in the boot and replaced the tyres with regular tyres when they wore out as the comfort is better and the run on flat tyres cost twice as much as regular tyres. The downside is that there is less room now in my boot but I can live with that.

I would take a spare saver (the little wheel barrow jobs) that would do me no probs....but to get nothing is mental dont like it at all. I mean come on how much more weight is a spare saver not even a full rim or alloy, its gonna make a tiny difference.
