What is the consensus on these type of jobs? Is there any possibility of getting paid for the work completed? From looking online some just work by having to pay for training courses/ equipment. Is there generally a base salary with them or are you technically self employed?

    Hi Remmy

Have a look at the "Writing & Content" jobs here: http://www.freelancer.com/sellers/

As you can see, there are a couple of thousand jobs. These are all work from home jobs.

I use freelancer.com to outsource work (i.e. I'm the employer) so here's my tips for using the site:

    1. ALWAYS get a milestone payment (stored on freelancer.com) for the full amount if possible before the project starts. In a nutshell this means the employers lodges your fee with freelancer.com and it is released when the project is completed. This adds a bit of extra security as freelancer is then acting as the middleman to pay your wage.

    2. Try to pick employers with good reviews. If in doubt, don't take their project.

    3. Communicate clearly! This will make things easier, and make it far more likely the employer will give you a positive review which makes it easier to get future work.

    Good luck.

  • What do freelance workers on Freelancer do about tax?

The issue I've seen on Freelancer (and to be fair, I haven't spent a great deal of time on it) is that there are scores of people from third world countries who can afford to work for absolute peanuts. I'm not expecting to make millions but I can't compete with a bloke in India offering his service for a tenth of the price.

Lots of people don't want to hire those guys though... quality can be erratic.

I can imagine. I've just had a look at the projects on offer and most of the employers can barely write/spell either. There's an ad looking for a writer, 'native English speaker proffored', which states that the grammar, punctuation and sentence structure of the finished article will be carefully checked. Carefully checked by someone who barely speaks English him/herself?

What type of work are you outsourcing?

    Haha :)

I outsource bits and pieces... generally small programming jobs I don't have the time or energy to solve.
