Friend of a friend is looking to sell a 1.8 petrol 2007 Mazda 6.

I had a mechanic take a look at the car and he said it was in great condition.
    Has just under 70k miles.

Whats it worth?. Hes looking for 7.5k. Can I expect to go much lower then that?.

Also any thoughts on this car, would only be doing around 10k miles a year.

Grossly overpriced. Old motor tax rates too as it's pre-2008.

Just type in 2007 Mazda 6 into donedeal and it'll give you price guides. Diesels will be more expensive.

Its the executive model, if that makes a difference.

It would add some value, only a few hundred euro.

A big petrol saloon on the old motor tax system isn't worth anything close to €7.5k. No one wants them anymore. I'd buy one (for the right money) if I didn't do huge mileage.

    What is it worth, anyone?

At most, it's probably worth 5.5k if it's in good condition.

I doubt I could find a single similar Mazda 6 on the internet for that price.

If you're buying the car from your friend, then look at private classified adds for price comparisons, as your friend is a private seller and not a dealer.

I could have gotten an 08 new model 1.8 for €7k 2 months ago.

Is your mate a dealer, or are you looking to pay him dealer money? Why?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,330 ✭✭✭readytosnap

    it's deffo worth 7.5k

to the guy that's selling it

but not to the guy that's buying it

I wouldn't pay more than 6 (at a push and only if i knew the complete history of the car)

buying cars from friends, on many occasions is a bad sign, for some reason, those good cars breaking up, and then friendship is over.

I'll put up an ad for one for €40k if you want. It won't affect the value of the one you're looking to buy...

What's the cheapest similar car you can find?

Why aren't you comparing private sales, rather than grossly inflated dealer prices? Those prices above are to reflect your trade-in allowance, so they add on €1k-€1.5k so you think you're getting a great deal on your old car. You then tell all your friends what a great deal you got.

The car is worth about €5.5k. Or €6k at a push, as a previous posted said, if it's 100% genuine.

These big petrol saloons on the old tax rates are impossible to sell.

So if you are buying from a dealer with no trade in you should always knock off 1.5k?

Nearly always. As I said between €1k to €1.5k. On cheaper cars the margin goes down. On more expensive cars the margin goes up.

    Well thats good to know.

So if a dealer is asking for 6k for an 07 1.4 nissan almera with 42k miles.....I should pay no more then 5k?

You need to take into account that the dealer would have spent money on getting the car to a standard, and needs to make a profit. It's not a given that there's x amount of margin in every car, looking at the range of prices of the same type car would show you that.

Private sale should always be cheaper than dealer given that you have no comeback and the garage would give a warranty.

Does it really matter to me how much the dealer spent on getting the car to standard, its still worth whats it worth.

Well any sane person will get the car checked independently before buying and so if the car isn't of good standard it will be worth less

If you intend buying the car it does as it's factored into the price, as mentioned buying privately should be cheaper.

Here you have new model Mazda 6 1.8 petrol for 750 euro more then what your friend is looking at for old model.
This new model is supposed to be more economical than 07 version and as well tax is bit cheaper than on 07 model.

Sounds to me like the OP is trying to justify selling one for €7500 rather than buying one. €5k will get you a decent 2007 old shape Mazda 6 petrol these days, they are decent value. There are plenty on donedeal in that price range.

    Stating the bleedin obvious....
The price pitched is his starting price for negotiations. It doesn't reflect what the car will ultimately sell for or that he expects to sell it for. The price at which cars are clearing in the market place is their market value.
