I know i risk some bad reactions here but i was wondering what car did you fall in love with despite what others would say?

For me it was a 7 seater.I know some posters just spat out there coffee/fainted/thumped the screen in rage but it gets worse....

it was the renault savannah!!!! I don't know why but I just loved my savannah's. Yes that is the plural. I had three. :D

The comfort of driving it was amazing, the space was huge. Three rows of seats and a full size boot too. I once folded the rear two rows and fitted a double bed into it. My heart was broken when i sold my last one and changed to a zafria. Now don't get me wrong I think the zafira is good but I would rather have my savannah. The wife and kids forced me to upgrade after 15 years of the savannah to a more modern car. Now they can't find me in a carpark because of all the zafiras :D

So is there a car out there you owned/wanted/have that others hate but you love? and why?

Volvo 245, considered a slow and clumsy tank by a lot of people (and they're not wrong) but it has a special place in my heart.

Showing my age here, but when I first saw the Ford Sierra I thought it was the dog's wotsits. The Cortina had become bland and boring and the Sierra looked almost space-age by comparison. 30 years on and I'm actually looking to buy a Cortina, and cringe every time I see a Sierra. :o

I like the "ugly" Dung Beetle shape, I like the facts its physics defying performance makes it the fastest SUV on the planet, I like the fact it came out when everyone else was faffing on about MPG, Eco-friendlness and soft core friendly looks. I even kinda like the reverse logic that out of the box its a 4x4 thats pretty pants at off-roading but excels on tracks. Sounds like a challenge!

Its the anti-thesis to the accepted norm of the last 5years.

My dad had one of them just after he left my mum all thoughts years ago. I remember going to see him after he had left the family home, he'd just bought it and it had broke down already. I think it broke down every week he had it. He he

Land Rovers obviously, a sad and expensive addiction! :o

When I had company cars it always had to be an estate, not sure why other than the ability to carry loads of crap around. Last was a 05 Volvo V50

yeah I was fairly young at the time but I remember there being a few issues with the ambassador we had as well, I intially hated it as everyone at school slagged me and I didnt like the suspension at the back was so high and made it look even uglier but as I got older I quite liked it -surprisingly very large inside and outside

Skoda Roomster - loved it from the first time I saw one. Bought one a year later.

The kids I teach says it looks like a disabled car - how very dare they!

Aston Martin Lagonda. Oft mentioned in "Worlds Ugliest Cars" lists, I think it's awesome in a bonkers way :D

That's the first car I thought of when I saw the title, almost bought one about 15 years ago, but it was a dog and would have ruined me financially.

I actually like the much maligned Fiat Multipla, simply because it dares to look so different, but I can't say that I ;oved it. But I do remember arguing about this 4x4 in secondary school when it first came out, everyone thought it was sh1te, I thought it was the dogs bollex, the idea that they would stick THAT 455 bhp V12 from the Countach into a Jeep was mental.

One of the mercedes commercial dealers ( Kinihans I think ) put a Lamborghini engine into a mercedes Vito a few years back. Was absolutely mental.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,884 ✭✭✭101sean

The LM002 was really mental but the US Army Hummer is descended from it (in a second cousin sort of a way). The first Tamiya RC model I built was the LM002 in around 1979.

Like that and the Lagonda, the late 70's early 80s spawned some oddballs.

Brother in Law had a Lotus Esprit in the early 90s, keptit for around 2 weeks before he saw sense.

Talbots were all good cars, exteriors looked dated though. I had a Solara, similar to an Escort but better spec. Google Tagora for definition of marketing disaster :)

    For me it's the Multipla.
    I eventually bought one!
3 fullsize seats across the front... Back seats clip out in seconds making it into a small van.. Totally flat floor, no sills to trip over, really high driving position and huge windows.
Twin sunroofs a reliable diesel engine and aircon.., really versatile and great fun to drive.
And it has to be the mark 1...

My Dad also had a solara. It really was a great car when compared to a similar vintage escort. He put 100K miles on one with little bother and that was some achievement back in the '80's.

Also love the X6. Saw one today and just thought it looks so unique and purposeful even though it has no real purpose. Everyone hates them but the hold their value comparitively well which suggests a strong demand second hand.

The people that don't like them have never been in one.

People dont "hate" Alfas (especially the 166, why single it out), they just dont think they are any good, overrated and/or dangerously unreliable. While there is some truth to all those things, I like them.

Compared to the other stuff in this thread, "Alfa's" have by far the least hate projected on them.

PS: You are biased, you went as far as to name your self after a car model, like the other anoraks here :P

    1st gen Saab 9000.

    0534671-Saab-9000-Turbo-16S-1989.jpg

Sure it was boxy and just a rebadged fiat and never going to have the swoopy good looks of the 900 but...

with a 2.3 turbo/intercooled petrol and swathes of comfy leather and wood on the inside and dials that looked like they had been lifted out of a jet, it was cool. And damn quick (in a straight line)

Always had a soft spot for V6 engined family cars of the 90s, I always really fancied the idea of us owning a Mondeo V6 in particular. Even now there is a part of me that would much rather the top model in a Mondeo, Passat etc was an inefficient V6 petrol as opposed to a boring old four cylinder diesel despite the fact that the top line Mondeos are a lot faster now as well as being far more fuel efficient.

I always admired anyone with an uncommon engine type, for example I have a soft spot for a Toledo or Golf V5, I loved the way it was so odd :o:o. Similarly I would have much rathered an E90 325i or especially a 330i over the default 320d (instead of the 325i) or a 335i (the default choice for anyone wanting a six cylinder 3 series), the 325i and 330i being the last of the naturally aspirated 3 series makes them far more 'interesting' to me than a 335i.

    got to be the glanza.

such an asbo of a car. plenty or garda attention, plenty of being tarred with the boy racer brush, plenty of looking un-professional everywhere i go. but i love the engine, i love the feel of the car, i cant see myself parting with it any time soon :)

I convinced my Dad to purchase a 505 V6 no less in 1987.
Highlights- Heated leather seats, 6 speaker sound system, 4 electric windows, would beat anything away from the lights.

Lots of people hated it, i loved it
