Can pick up UTV on Saorview - what about BBC?

    Hi folks

My parents live in Co. Cavan and have recently been able to pick up UTV, Channel 4, Channel 5 on their Panasonic Saorview TV. Seeing as they are getting these channels, I would have thought they should also be able to pick up BBC 1 & 2 NI. I did an autoscan on their TV this morning, but to no avail.

Can anyone point me in the right direction or am I barking up the wrong tree?

    Thanks!

Probably the reception is borderline. It probably wouldn't take much to lose UTV etc entirely. There's lots of threads here on things you can do to improve reception. Replacing old cable with good quality, double-screened copper coaxial cable in particular can give easy improvements without having to spend a fortune. This is especially true for long cable stretches between aerial and TV.

It might also be a good idea to contact a local aerial installer.

The UK channels are not on Saorview: they'll be picking them up from a transmitter in Northern Ireland. Freeview is the name given to the UK terrestrial service.

More than likely, your parents' aerial system needs attention. It's possible all the necessary components are there, but their condition has deteriorated with time.

The Panasonic TV in question is 'Saorview appoved' ie. able to pick up Saorview (ROI DTT) channels but can also pick up Freeview (UK DTT) channels. That's maybe where the confusion arises.

That may resolve confusion but it won't bring back reception of the BBCs. Freeview is a digital TV broadcast, much like Saorview. Once a TV can look at both types of video, it's just a matter of receiving Freeview from a NI broadcasting site and Saorview from an ROI broadcasting site. Some people in the Republic can even get Freeview but no Saorview! (Very rare, I know)

Thanks for feedback folks - sounds like they need to get their aerial tweaked which will more than likely get them the BBC channels also.
