Ford Transit Connect Gearbox Problem

I have a 2007 Ford Transit Connect van that is crunching a bit when changing from 2nd gear into 3rd and from 4th down to 3rd. If i change gear slowly it does not crunch. Problem is obviously with 3rd gear but does anybody know what the problem is likely to be, what is the fix, how big of a job is it and how much would it likely cost?
I am not wanting to do the job myself but would like to use a mechanic or garage for the repair.
    Kilkenny Area
Thanks in advance for any replies.

You can get your own gearbox repaired but there are two disadvantages to this option. First of all the cost - probably around €450 ex VAT just for the repair work. Second disadvantage is the time your van will be off the road while the gearbox is away being repaired.

The cheapest option would be to get a secondhand replacement. This way you can have the van back on the road within a day and it will cost you less as well. Obviously the disadvantage is the added risk that the secondhand gearbox will have faults as well or will develop them over time but the Connect gearboxes don't give that much trouble so you should be safe enough.

Cost-wise I would say about €250-300 for a secondhand gearbox and about €250 for labour to fit it plus a few quid for new gearbox oil, etc. Depending on the mileage/history of the car fitting a new clutch and possibly dual mass flywheel might also be a good idea while the gearbox is being removed anyway.

Thanks very much for your reply.

I have another van so it would not be a problem if the Connect was off the road for a few days. I would just hate to spend money on another gear box, pay somebody to fit it only to find it was duff and go through it all over again as it would not be the mechanic's fault if it was duff. Mileage on it would also be an unknown. I am VAT registered so VAT is not an issue.

What do you think the problem is with 3rd gear?

We had the same problem with a company van a few years back, Transit Connect as well. Got a reconditioned box from Naas Gearbox. Give them a call, they will fit and give a warranty as well.

Third gear syncro is gone, it happens to them sometimes.

Sounds good. I do a lot of work in the Naas area so that would not be a problem.
How much roughly did it cost for a reconditioned one?
I will give them a call on Monday.

I think we paid somewhere between €600 - €1100. But we got the box and had to send it down to the van stuck in Sligo to be fitted, so labour would need to be added.

Ouch! Might try the repair my own one. I could handle €450.
Does anybody have any recommendations for somebody good to do this work? I can travel within reason to suit.
