Car acting funny after oil change?

So a few weeks ago I topped up the oil level in my car after it had dropped a bit low, I used a synthetic oil which is "suitable for all engines", which is why I got it, Im not an expert on oils or aything. And now since the oil change, the car is jerking at low gears, for instance it will jerk forward every now and then when Im starting her in the morning and I have to floor the accelerator real hard sometimes going up a hill and the exhaust spews a lot more smoke and it takes more effort moving smoothly in low gears. There is no issue with high speeds, its just going slowly up hills and around corners when it jerks and spews more smoke, is this a serious problem and could there be any engie damage occuring?

My car is a 2000 Hyundai 1.4 for the record. Any advice would help thanks.

There's no such thing as oil suitable for all engines. I would get the oil and oil filter changed to be honest.

Change the oil and oil filter and only use Hyundai approved stuff.
Some cars are more sensitive than others.

Also, how much did you top up? Title says "oil change"..

As above OP, how much oil did you put in? I had a guy in with me before asking why his car was running so bad, this guy was a 'Modified Car Enthusiast'. He said he topped up the oil as it was low. He had literally filled it to the neck with oil ! If your car is blowing smoke I'd imagine its been overfilled. Very often the difference between the min/max on a dipstick can be less the half a litre !

^ Hmm, im not sure the exact amount, I didnt horse a load of it in, just enough to top it up a bit, maybe about 75ml or so..

The oil you threw in would no doubt be fine for a 1.4 petrol Accent, wouldn't worry at all about that. If the symptoms only occur at low speeds and more frequently when cold I would think it's quite likely ignition related.

You didn't change the oil, you topped it up. You still have some old crap in there.

.......You still have some old crap in there.

In fairness he hasn't told us when it was last serviced so what's in there could well be the finest of shtuff altogether :)

I get the impression it might not be. But it might be I suppose.

It's not the oil, you didn't put enough in to make a change. But it's probably time to change the oil and filter anyway. Use proper stuff just in case, particularly the filter.

The car is 12 years old, it could be hoses or seals getting affected by the cold.
Check the hoses etc in engine bay for hairline cracks. With engine running squeeze everything you see - be super careful around moving parts, no loose sleeves or hanging hair or necklaces! At the same time listen to the engine, does it change note?
