Mrs Woody was driving when all the power failed, luckily on the drive up to a house. The engine quit and the car came to a stop. Dashboard had been illuminated but all dash lights went out. She turned off the ignition and maybe 25 seconds later she could start it again with everything normal. I wasn't with her so I don't have any more information.
A few days ago it would not start, we took it back to the dealer who says he changed the battery, it's been starting fine but I noticed the temp gauge had become intermittent, reading cold and miles later jumping up to normal.
Any help would be great, she says she'd hate it to happen on a motorway.

Coolant temp sensor could be faulty. Not sure if it would cause it to cut out but would explain the jumpy gauge

I think the dash gives trouble in some of these, its not an easy fix.
The dash is the immobiliser from what I remember.

Immobiliser problems might explain the power loss, and maybe a seperate temp sender issue. The drivers door was not opening on the blipper and had a part replaced lost week too, I don't know if that could have made something else act up.

Had the same problem myself...nearly all pre 2002 skoda/seat/volkswagen/audi cars and vans are affected..

The source of your trouble is relay 109...This supplies power to the cars ecu (electronic brain) Its located behind the panel beneath the steering wheel..(You will need torx head screwdriver to remove this panel)

The new 109 relay is grey in colour...costs around €25 from a main dealer..
It must be fitted with the pins in the same position as the old (black coloured relay) On my car this was upsidedown...so it will read 601..

This part on the pre 02 cars had weak internal solder connections. The company quietly issued a revised relay to all their dealers that fixed the problem totally

    Hope this sorts your problem...

Well I'd prefer it to be a relay than the immobiliser. I will see if I can get the faults scanned on Monday. Oh and another thing, it's flashing "service" when the ignition is switched on, maybe related or not. Thanks for the responses.

That's just a service reminder. Goes off every 10000 miles or so depending on how it was set.
Is the glow plug light coming on when you turn the ignition?

Give that 109 relay a wiggle and it will probably start. That's if it happens again of course. Obviously wise to get it changed though.

I've had the fault codes read by our trusty local mechanic (Edward O'Shea Tramore), the only issue logged is the temp sender. I found relay 109 and gave it a good wiggle, it's the newer grey one which is kind of a pity. We will get the dealer to replace the temp sender and see what he says about the relay. The power loss has not reappeared. Thanks for the replies.
