    Hi All

Just wondering if anyone can help me find a place that sells the above. Our upstairs windows don't have the facility to lock them so we need to have some sort of safety catch on them.

Any help on stockists in Galway would be great.

What I did was swap the lockable handles that were on some of my downstairs windows with the ordinary ones in the kids' rooms. They're poor quality (keys are like something off child's toy) but they've held up so far, touch PVC.

Just recently I saw a child-proof catch on new windows. It was on the head (top horizontal frame) of the window, allowing the window to open only partially, and I wondered whether they can be bought separately and retrofitted.

Just found this thread on Boards: http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2056038502

Typical Irish buildings standards that allow such insecure windows to be installed as standard in family homes?

    Another thread with suggestions here.

You can try B&Q, Woodies etc but I'd buy online and put them up yourself

I use the spring loaded window restrictor.

a very easy fix for a pvc window is to fit a screw to the friction hinge it will only allow the window to open a couple of inches

Illegal in a fire escape window.

    Good point.

How would an ordinary punter recognise a fire escape window in their house?

...having a very narrow escape when using window locks, misplacing the keys and then being caught in a fire with no way of escaping.

An outside helper had to break the glass using considerable force to get her out.

    Smoke can kill in seconds.

Modern double glazing units are a lot stronger than most people can break without a hammer etc.

Many more people die in fires than in falls.

I'm about to upgrade my in-house fire protection (extinguishers etc) and you've just prompted me to add window-breaking implements to the list. No use searching for the hammer in an emergency.

Any suggestions re fire escape ladders, btw?

How does any person (child or adult) get out of the window opening in an emergencey,if you have screwed it/modified it to only open a few inches?????????

Are you aware that god forbid serious injuries or death due to a fire, that you would be held accountable for manslaughter,if your modification resulted in serious injury or loss of life.
