Galaxy s2 problems

Have had my galaxy s2 for close to a year and have been very happy with it in general. That is until a month or two ago when I started having a number of issues with it. They include

    - phone freezes at times and the message "music had stopped working" appears despite the fact I wasn't using it
-when I swipe to answer calls it also freezes on occasion
-the battery doesn't seem to last half a day and sometimes the phone heats up when the screen is frozen and the battery can go from being full to nearly empty in a matter of minutes
-the phone can just randomly switch off and it requires me to take out the battery and put it back in to start up again

Any ideas or suggestions would be much appreciated

Did you upgrade Android on it by any chance?
Doesn't sound like anything that a update couldn't fix, maybe even backup all your stuff and do a factory reset
Google account can handle most of backup, Gmails, Contacts, Photos to Picasa or Google Drive, get SMS Backup+ for texts.

Upgraded to 4.0.4 and am currently using nova prime launcher. Problems existed prior to using nova though. Would the upgrade affect the battery?

I'm not sure about the battery life with the latest official stock ROM, think it's 4.1.2 , check the SGS2 thread for that.
Several custom ROMs come with custom kernels (Siyah/Dorimanx/Dream kernel for example) which is the core of the Android OS that have custom tweaks to them to save battery life.
(I have Siyah kernel with Revolt JB ROM but I still charge every night anyway, it varies, but I'm at 53% battery after 13hours)

OP, answer to your problem No. 1, 2, 3 and 4 is root & flash a good ROM.

You're not the first person complaining about freezing/reboots/battery problems with the original firmware...

Get a different ROM - I am on CM10 Nightlies at the moment and its been the best for long lasting battery that I have tried. It may lag once or twice during the day but not to an extent that it bothers me
